is 6 cores overkill for a first build?

you havent? because ive seen posts on here where people havent clocked theres that high !

Possibly because they don't feel they need to at the moment, or their CPU coller isn't on right, (or general temp problems) their board / other components, their settings are to blame and so on. I'm not stating for a moment though that every chip will do the 4GHZ, there's always the odd one or two which sucks.

so if someone cant reach 4ghz then its anything but the cpu's problem? :D

It's all down to the chip stepping isnt it as always! As far as I'm aware D0's are pretty much guaranteed 4ghz with the ability to get to 4.2ghz.

C0 Steppings struggle to get to 4ghz.

Overclocking has always been about getting a decent stepping. I7 -920 doesnt guarantee 4ghz. Hell, Even I7- 920 with a D0 stepping doesnt guarantee it!! Just makes it likely!

Clearly you've missed the point where I agree with you that there's some which obviously can't clock to 4GHZ because it's the chip.

Stop being so defensive. :o

*EDIT*

Though to be fair, I could possibly have worded it better.

Also this.

I was mearly pointing out that since we're not sat there trying to help a person out, or knowing the reasons, we simply can't know the true percentage which can actually make the "4GHZ goalpost".

errm as this is my first build, i don't think i'd overclock off the bat, i'd give it a couple of months and sum of research before i do it

To be fair, overclocking is pretty simple unless you're looking to go for the bleeding edge. I'm not saying you should do it, mearly that it's not that hard to do mild overclocks. Basically revolving around increasing FSB.

i understand and im not totally against it but i don't wanna do it the day i put the system together, last thing i attempted to overclock ended up in a smoking mess... was a laptop though haha

This be any good as a build??

any little upgrades etc. i can go for maybe the GPU??

I'd go for a GTX460 to be honest. (The 1GB model). You get quite a lot of extra performance for only £20 more.

Only thing then would be the MB you've chosen can't do SLI, so I'd look around for a Asus M4N98TD Evo, shouldn't take you long to find one in stock in the UK for £95.02...

May need an optical drive too...

Oh, and I'd go for a Samsung F3 or WD Caviar Black 500GB HDD over the Seagate (think the F3 costs the same).

Otherwise, good to go!

I bought this yesterday for £49 when it was the special offer of the week, shame you missed it. :(

Double the capacity and it's faster, and only costs £17 more than the one you chose. I'd go up a step if I were you. :P

I've just moved from an F1 320gb, from the benchmarks I've found the F3 1tb is 53% faster. :S Can't really believe that tbh, I think the results are warped.
