is 6 cores overkill for a first build?

i know this is the cpu section but im kinda shocked that you guys aren't giving him a better graphics card instead of a better cpu. a 5770 wont last much more than 1-2 years. he really should have atleast quad core but having 6 cores isn't going to do much for him as he's mentioned it just typical stuff i.e. gaming/web and films.
i'd try to go for a Radeon 5XXX series or the nvidia equivalent for about £200 notes.

ofcourse if you went second hand (some people feel thats cheapskate and can be dodgy) but i saw a 5870 HIS on the member market for £240 inc...(im sure its that model)

actually what resolution does your monitor do :o

For an equivalent speed i.e. 4GHz v 4GHz the i7 is quicker but if you compare similarly priced chips(approx £230) at stock speed (not overclocked) e.g. i7 930(2.8GHz) and the X6 1090T(3.2GHz) the AMD is quicker in some areas.

Hey Willie Sawyer! :)

Just thought I'd add a comparison between these two chips that were included in the specs, a lot of folk still don't really pay a lot of attention to the affordable AMD® Athlon™ II processors but as you can see they certainly deliver a lot of bang-for-buck and make the "justification" process for buying a hex core quite tough! :D

£80.99 inc vs £159.99 inc (+97.5% ££)

Big Wayne if you don't already work for AMD you really should apply for a job ;)

with the amount of uneducated rubbish that gets posted on these forums someone needs to defend AMD.

everyone kept saying buy intel if you encode amd suck at it etc.

funny how the amd vs intel encoding thread so far favors amd even clock for clock.....
even some of the forum mods do it but maybe the store gets better profit margins on intel cpus

i wouldnt say its because of an intel affiliation but you arent wrong in what you say. Sam thing happens in the apple section as well. It just makes getting down to the detail that much more frustrating.

Check my sig. I'm not unsympathetic :)

The upgrade version works fine Willie! :)

You can do a clean install with it exactly the same as the full version, then when Windows is completely installed you do this . . . I've done Method #2 on three of four systems this way and all is good!

Yup a clean install means either a formatted old hard-disk or a brand new disk . . . I've used a few Windows 7 Home Home Premium Upgrade disks and one Windows 7 Professional upgrade disk and it's a piece of cake!

It's your wonga though and if you feel like giving Bill some more of your beer money thats your call! :D

To the OP, yes, for what you intend to do, 6 cores is overkill. A quad will last you just as well. As for all the fighting between Intel and AMD fanboys, it comes down to what you want to spend or how much you can afford. I see they put up a lot of nice graphs and bar charts showing performance marks. But as an end user, you're never going to be able to tell the difference if all you're doing is gaming and browsing the web. Save money on the CPU and get yourself a graphics card that will last you however long you're wanting it to.

Off Topic:

Intel and AMD fanboys

Hello Brian,

as I see you are new to OcUK please allow me to get you up to speed on a few changes that have happened here recently . . . it is now considered a Pejorative term and bad form to call anyone a FanBoy . . . I personally find it offensive to be classed as a FanBoy for recommending reasonable and affordable hardware . . . I also do not like people suggesting I work for a large corporation because I happen to recommend a lot of hardware made by that manufacturer! :(

Argumentum ad hominem
This is the error of attacking the character or motives of a person who has stated an idea, rather than the idea itself . . . The relevant question is not who makes the argument, but whether the argument is valid.

the suggested route forward is to deal with the arguement from a rational and factual perspective . . . the contributer has nothing to do with the debates, only the logic and reasoning is under scrutiny

All I care about is giving my fellow forum members as much information as possible in order that they are able to make an informed and factual choice . . . There is so much mis-information about computer hardware floating about it makes it very hard for the layman to actually know what they need and I feel that a lot of people end up spending a lot more cash than perhaps they needed too!

I hope I typed this message in the right way so as not to cause any offence . . .

Thank you for reading and goodnight!

Bit concerned about some of the graphics cards being touted in this thread, given that he's a gamer and wants a system that'll last 3 years. 5770 won't cut it IMO, it needs to be a GTX460 at the very least, and if that means a slightly cheaper CPU, then so be it.

HangTime, I think maybe we don't know what resolution his monitor is and what games he plays? . . . also I didn't interpret his brief as meaning he wants a single graphics card to last three years? . . . popping out a GPU and replacing it in 18 months is not how I think of a "mass overhaul " . . . I've also specc'ed him up a Crossfire PCI-E 2.0 8x/8x motherboard so if he does indeed become a 3D junkie he can easily add another GPU!

i want this build to last me at least 3 years before i need to do any sort of mass overhaul etc
