At the moment i have 2x1gb sticks of ram with 2 slots left. Im thinking of putting another 2x2gb sticks is to make it 6gb ram. Is this an overkill?

My rig:

CPU: [email protected]
GFX: 8800gtx

If it is too much of an overkill i could get another 2x1gb sticks and save £50 :D

I am a gamer, playing top titles such as Crysis/COD4 etc.

I really don't think you'll find any difference between 4 and 6gb. I would just go with another 2gb

Hey lolage, for what you will be using your system for, I think getting an extra 2GB of memory would be the better option. Having 6GB of memory, the majority of the time that extra 2GB just won't get used. :)

It will be used mostly for gaming. Is there much of a difference between 2gb and 4gb?

In theory it should get used (for superfetch).

Also by that logic, there's little point in getting 4gig RAM. One might as well get 3gig RAM since that extra 1gig won't be used the majority of the time.

I think when you take price into account another 4gb on top of 2gb isn't worth it.

With 4gb Vista is blazing fast....by the time 6gb is beneficial I would imagine it would be time to upgrade to DDR3.

Im talking more along the lines of when playing games, the performance increase you would get from going from 4GB up to 6GB of memory would be very small, pretty unnoticeable I would imagine. :)

I can see where you're coming from, although to save hassle and taking into account the current state of the memory market (Prices ), its slightly silly :p to go for 3GB of memory instead of 4GB. Though i would imagine 4GB of memory will help in upcoming games such as Crysis? :)

On the gaming side of things 4GB wont really make a difference let alone 6GB.

If I were you I'd go along with another 2gb kit (its dead cheap now anyways) and be done with it :)

Having more than 2gb can cause problems with some games. One that does is Supreme Commander. You have to edit the .exe to add the support as GPG wont release it in an update. Though you WILL notice a difference in games from 2gb. Feels better, and loads faster.

6gig its definitly overkill, even 4gig is overkill in my opinion, but if you must upgrade, just get another 2Gig.
