Is 70C the highest you should run a Q6600

Following on from my post below where my Q6600 got slightly burned at 80C not enough to kill it (I don't think) but not a good sign. This was on stock cooling + a big fan on top outside the case.

I`m getting an Antec 900 and Ak-965 the case is good but the cooler is not the best in the world its better then an AC7 but you can get better. My aim is too get the highest speed at up to 70C.

I think 1.4v load will push me above this temp and I know higher won't kill it but I don't want any more burning to take place, I ran my old Q6600 up to 98C once and it didn't die so I guess high temps won't kill it but they will cause burn marks to appear, too much burning and its goodbye chip.

I`m hoping that my chip will be able to run at slightly below 1.4v and remain stable at 3.4ghz this should keep the temps down to 70C. It seems at 80C things are already starting to burn. Just how safe is 70C even.

i worry if my temp hit's 40 on my 6600....get a bigger fan m8.
get the tuniq tower....well worth getting for pushing your chip higher and keeping it cool.

Depends on how you feel. The cpu should throttle down when it overheats.

Personally I keep mine below 70C. I have good reason as one of my cores is dodgy and always falls over when it hits 73C in prime95.

That's far too cautious. As has been said, 40c is fine for an idle temp, and you'd be pretty lucky to get a 40c load temp unless you had a big cooler and didn't OC.

These 65nm chips are really hard to kill - if they run too hot, they'll just throttle back or shut down. Higher temps will reduce your maximum overclock, though. I aim for 70c as a target.

If i remember correctly Q6600 G0 (95W) stepping is rated up to 71.0 degrees C while the B3 only 62.2 degrees.

As I say I`m getting the Akasa AK-965 it has a 92mm fan attached and its been suggested to me that I should cable tie another 92mm fan on the other side of the heatsink so that I have push and pull...

It can't hurt to try this and if it lowers temps a bit then its gotta be good.

If your CPU doesn't hit atleast 70c under Prime95 then you're not trying hard enough

On this disgustingly hot day my idles (Well, surfing...) are currently 42-46.

I envy the hell out of people with lower than that but its not to bad really.

71c is the max case temp which is measured on the top of the IHS, core temps can go higher... As cob says if your not hitting 70c in Prime then your not trying hard enough :) I have no issue with hitting 75c in prime but I guess its a matter of personal choice.. Q6600 = free mhz may as well get them

When I didn't have my heatsink on proper my Q hit 81c and I kept waiting for it to crash but it never did.

I had that the other night, 80+ under prime 95. Checked it today, along with sorting the cabling and airflow out and 2 of the 4 screws were definitely looser than they should be. Very odd.

Tightened them up and now things are a lot better. I think these chips may be more robust than some people think.

I run mine nearly 7 hours at a time at around 75C (Load Temp) since December

Getting my Tuniq tower and AS5 soon so should lower it quite a bit.
