Is 9900k worth upgrading to from 8700?

Ended up with RTX3900 after getting bored waiting for 3800 and my 8700 is not cutting it.

I'm planning to do a fully upgrade once the dust has settled with rocket lake - new cpu / motherboard / case etc - but in the meantime is it worth upgrading to a 9900k as no new motherboard needed?

Not too fussed money-wise (will be around £300) and will ebay the 8700 but will it be a noticeable upgrade for gaming?

When you say your 8700 isn't cutting it, in what respect do you mean?

What games are you playing and at what resolution?

Have you overclocked the CPU?

I can't imagine an 8700 being much of a problem for a 3090.

Aiming for 4k60 with mostly max settings but find single cores maxing out - recently Crysis and just got Valheim today and even that won’t hit 60 consistently even though gpu usage is low.

It’s non k so can’t be overclocked.

I upgraded from a 9600K to a 9900K so a better upgrade that yours would be, but I still think it's a decent enough upgrade depending on how bad you want it, especially as you have a non K version, but I don't know if a 9900K will necessarily play that nice in a Z370 board, though I think some others have upgraded it successfully that way with newer bios.

Mine was well worth doing and eliminated any upgradeitis as I can't go any higher. Got 32GB ram as well so looking to keep this for a good few years. I think 9900K + 32GB ram likely good enough this entire console generation and possibly beyond.

9900K still pretty nice in benches too, for a cheaper one around £300 could be good but then there's the Z370 board to consider.

As mentioned above, make sure your motherboard is up to the task. If you're using a non-K 8700, I can't imagine you have it in one of the super high-end Z370 boards, and a lot of the cheaper ones struggle with the 9900K.

There is a bios update available for it - https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z370M-D3H-rev-10/support#support-dl-bios

I already have 32GB of RAM so this is the only upgrade I can do without needing a new motherboard.

The 9900k is £300 on amazon and probably £120ish back on ebay for the 8700.

This could potentially hold me over until next years offerings... decisions....

I had to do a bios update even with my Z390 for the 9900K to work, so that latest bios for your Z370 that says it supports 9900K could be worth a try, your MB is at least a Gigabyte UD which were fine for 9900K for Z390. But if you only plan to keep it a year, I wouldn't bother and just keep your 8700 till next year. With your 32GB could get a few years out of the 9900K. Otherwise maybe just save for next year's stuff.

From what I gather the Z370M D3H is pretty bottom of the barrel as far as Z370 boards go, if you intend to OC you might struggle with it, and I'm not sure I'd buy a 9900K if I didn't intend to OC.

That game is coded really badly, this website test got 48fps at 1080p with 9900k/2080ti

Crysis Remastered suffers from single-thread CPU issues, just like the original game (dsogaming.com)
Crysis Remastered suffers from single-thread CPU issues, just like the original game

In order to test the game, we used an Intel i9 9900K with 16GB of DDR4 at 3600Mhz and an NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti.

As you can see in the following screenshot, at 1080p/Very High our system was running the game with 48fps. Our GPU usage was at 58% and one of our CPU cores was maxed out.
In short, the following screenshot showcases the game’s CPU optimization issues. Yes, similarly to the original game,
Crysis Remastered cannot take advantage of multi-core CPUs.

Yeah Crysis is not a good example and based on comments here does sound like a waste of money getting a 9900k so will leave for now - cheers all...
