Is a 5090 really overkill for 1440?

I say it more boils down to how easy you can afford one..

If someone struggled to be able to afford to pay 2k to 3k for one then it really ain't worth it

Some reviews have been showing that the 5090 is bottlenecked by a 9800x3d at 1440p so I'd say its overkill for that resolution, especially if your upper limit it gonna be 165fps.
I’d be extremely surprised by that, my 4090 bottlenecks my 9800x3d at 3440x1440, rarely see my CPU get taxed at all in games.

Do you have a link to where you saw this? I’d be interested to try the same games they tried on my rig.

Hardware Canucks showed it pretty well

My 5700x was bottlenecking my 3080 12gb at 3440x1440. It doesn't show in averages or benchmarks, and it depends on the games you play and the scenes or areas you're in. GPU/CPU utilisation are not good indicators alone, PresentMon is really helpful for this.

Depends on what you prefer and games types you play. Higher static resolution or higher motion resolution.
1440p for high framerate gaming with better motion clarity and 4k for high static pq with lower motion clarity. In my habits I have a use for both resolutions and couldn't pick between the two as they both have their pros.

My monitors 165Hz, not OLED though. Dont get me wrong, dont really want to drop over 2k on a gpu but I want to upgrade to Nvidia and the 5080 just doesnt seem good enough. I suppose thats exactly what they want though, people buying the 5090 because the 5080 isnt quite enough.
Don't think thats the reason for the poor 5080, cause there is also a very steep price difference between them and thats saying something when the 5080 is 1000+. Another 1000 is not something you just throw around casually unless you really got money to burn. The sad truth in my eyes is that for nvidia x80 class cards and below are just pleb tier and not worth thinking much about now that they are earning buckets in the AI market.

Is the 5090 overkill for 1440p? Yes

Why? Because there is no CPU on the market that will not severely bottleneck the 5090 at this resolution.

Conclusion: Go buy a 5080 and stop simping for the 5090 if you're gonna game on a low resolution screen.

I think these days there are just too many factors to take in to account to answer the question. Once upon a time the only factor was "which game do you play?", then it was "at what resolution?", and most of us probably upgraded every two years or so. But now now the questions include "at what fps do you play?" and "do you use DLSS?", "how much are you prepared to spend?", "how long are you planning on it lasting?". Upgrading is so expensive now that we have to start answering a lot more questions and they are mostly personal - specific to your games, your PC and your expectations.

its the G9 OLED I think its 240hz I mostly play Arma Reforger, My 2080 super is struggling!
with those kind of resolutions and refresh rates then yeah you'll need a new gpu. However 5090 may still be overkill, you could probably get a high end 40 series or 5080 or something that could do the trick

As noted with path tracing nothing is overkill and you'll probably get more longevity out of it.

I game at 1440p ultrawide on my desktop and 4k on my Oled when couch gaming and my 3090 has kept me going and is only beginning to show it's age now. That being said the 5090 is too much of a pill to swallow at 2k for me!
yea, If I hadn't been saving for so long it it wouldn't be buying one even having the cash their its still a hard pill to swallow, was tempted to just pick up a 5080 and see what next gen brings!

I have recently discovered DLDSR and RTX HDR, both of which suck up performance (particularly DLDSR) but do add nicely to the right game. I found both surprisingly noticeable with a 4090 on a 4K 42inch LG C2. Check out some of the YouTube videos on DLDSR and see what you think - it looks to me like it cleans up the image at 1440p although that's not a universally held view.

There are games that would break the 6090 right now - like other peopel said, pathtracing is so comically intensive that it requires ai tomfoolery
