Hi,

Currently running an Asus 7850 1gb and it can struggle a bit on high/ultra on 64 player maps.

I have been thinking of upgrading it to a 7950 and overclocking it (if required) but i was a unsure if i should hang on a bit in case bf4 needs something a bit more powerful or just bite the bullet and get one anyway.

I have read through the forums quite a bit and the 7950 seems to be the best bang for buck card out atm. That being said i read somewhere the 8xxx series is due to be released in q3? not sure if that is true or not.

What do you guys think? buy now or wait a bit.

If I were you I'd do a quick GPU shuffle, October is months away.

Sell the 7850, and buy a 2nd hand 7950, you might be able to do a nice upgrade for about £100.

Come October you can sell the 7950, and buy a new card + games inc. BF4, and you're set GPU wise for a couple of years.

7950 is no doubt the best bang for buck card out there. OC and you're not far off a 7970.

Yeah a second hand 7950 looks a good option, i was wondering if bf4 would be free with cards around the time of release. It most likely will be and will save me £40 on buying it so it makes sense to wait to to buy a brand new card.

Just need to find a reasonably priced 7950 now if im buying second had :)

Ask yourself this, do you really need a 7950? Won't your 7850 do till bf4? Is they games you playing now we're your system isn't doing well with?

Just turn all AA off for BF3 and wait until October, the chances are the new GPU's will be out just before and BF4 bundled with them.

Yes, BF4 is gonna ship with new AMD cards.

I think waiting, and doing as I suggested with a 7950 are both good plans - it depends on how happy you are with lowered setting for a long while etc and your own financial situation.

To me, ideally you could do the shuffle and buy new in October having got a 7950 to trade in for probs £150 at least.

I'm considering the very same thing myself.

You're asking to upgrade for a game that isn't out and will be released with newer generation cards?

the 7850 is a good card, but as said in my op it struggles a bit with current 64 player maps which i am currently playing. i guess +1 to your post count though.

I think i can wait, but my money is telling me to do otherwise :)

No I was merely being rhetoric - pointing out the answer to your thread title lies within itself :)

Just wait it out you will not see super amazing changes going to a 7950.

If i were you, having trouble with 64 player servers i would lower the settings to the abselute lowest except for the resolution and mesh quality. What you will most likely find is that your 3570k is having some difficulties which is pretty normal on some maps with 64 players. The graphic settings during singleplayer where the cpu doesnt have that much strain to begin with. Then when playing MP on 48 or 64 player maps, fiddle with the Mesh quality. Should work for most people in CPU bound scenarios

i've lowered the settings to a playable level, but you know how it is guys, got the upgrade itch haha.

Yeah my cpu and gpu is overclocked, to be fair it's not a constant issue, just now and then.

It's just me wanting to play around with my setup more than anything and i was curious to see if people thought a 7950 would be up to the job for BF4, i gues it's one of those things where we won't know until we see some real world benches. Can't rely on any specification requirements from EA :)

Overclocking a 7950 will be faster than a (stock) 7970. :)

Anyway as a few people here have said already.. stick with what u have until u get closer to the release date of BF4. Im sure BF4 will come free with the new card ;)
