Is a 980Ti overkil??

Didn't think it was overkill for me at 1080p considering I couldn't max The Witcher 3 with all the pretties on and keep above 60fps all the time!

Damn I miss that card :(

no point in 980ti tbh (not saying it's bad but it's a lot of money when better is around the corner), you may as well get a 970 / 390 at that res and then get the next set of cards when they come out. They'll last you longer and give you a chance to see if you're happy with the 970 / 390 performance. As others say, there isn't really an overkill because it'll just ensure it lasts a bit longer but 390's are going to be £205 on black friday. Can't foresee even a 980ti being worth the extra £300 over that. May as well save the extra and sell the 390 when the next set of cards come out.

Buy low sell for whatever you can get but clearly gibbo has already hinted that the 980ti won't come down much, it's only higher end 980ti that are getting the deals (so will remain around 500 anyway). Your choice but the ti will lose more value than the 390 will and when you move to next series of cards then the ti will be left in the dust anyway and you'll have lost as little as possible by getting the cards on a black friday deal.

Understand, and appreciated. I'm 100% green team though. Just not a fan of AMD cards, especially after seeing the farce with AMD card in Fallout 4. Call in fanboy-ism, but I've just always preferred Nvidia cards. I'm not rushing into any purchase, but I am hoping to grab one of the cheaper 980Tis (Strix would be awesome, but I'm not paying £600+) on a black Friday deal. I'm really really hoping there'll be some Tis under £450 today :D

Was that not because of nvidia's hairworks not being quite there yet?

Overkill, No

But...? :D

A 970 is fine for 1080p, especially for Skyrim as it needs to be restricted to 60fps regardless of mods. Also, standing looking up Whiterun or Markarth will see frames of around 50fps with a 980Ti running at 40% or whatever... the game is bugged.

My advice would be to buy a 980Ti if you can afford it. They are awesome cards, and not only will you have room to manoeuvre with more demanding games in future, you'll also be well placed to up your resolution to 1440p without any trouble.

If a 970 is more aligned to your budget, it won't struggle at 1080p. You'll be getting a good boost with the extra 2GB of Vram and you'll be kissing goodbye to SLI issues and if memory serves me right when I moved from 670 SLI to a single 970 the grunt was a bit better and overall things were much smoother.

I know, this is what my head keeps saying. My concern is that a single 970 won't give much grunt over a pair of 670s, but the extra VRAM will be nice. Even 4GB though is going to be lacking within twelve months, and if I cough up now for any new card, I'd want it to last at least 24 months. Really I could argue my entire rig needs updating, but the 2500k is still serving me very well (I can always get another .3Ghz out of it if I really wanted to push it harder). My idea is to get some obscene card like the 980Ti that has loads of grunt and plenty VRAM so that I don't need to upgrade for a few years. Looking at the titles I play (STALKER, Fallout4, Skyrim, Mass Effect trilogy - all of which get heavily modified) it's the VRAM I need, so really my options are limited to a 390 (nope!) or a 980Ti...

i would not say the 980ti is overkill but there are cheaper options for 1080p, the 970 amd amd 390 will both do a decent job for that res, but if your happy to spend the dosh on a 980ti then why not spoil yourself

Sorry dude, I quoted a few messages at once so didn't see yours when I replied. See above :)

Also, for anyone interested, a French Rainforest site has the Asus 980 Ti SC ACX2.0 (06G-P4-4995-KR) for 678 Euros, which works out at £474 plus postage.

Many here might say there is no such thing as overkill. Who doesn't like massive FPS during games. A 980Ti at 1080p will last you many many years.

That's correct, There's no such thing just like there is no card capable of giving massive fps figures in any title at 1080p.

There will always be games that bring a card to it's knees even the 980ti or Titan X will struggle to give 60 fps in some maxed games.

Here's an example

http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/614...d-with-23-gpus-test-results-full-hd-1920x1080
Maxed 1080p with a Titan X gives under 40 fps in GTAV.

So while the fastest cards out there are perfectly adequate to run these games there is certainly no such thing as overkill,
At least not as long as dev's give us overly demanding settings that barely add anything to the visuals.

Overkill's just a word for salty envious people!

I made the same upgrade (2x670 -> 980Ti) and don't regret it one bit. Not having to deal with small SLI quirks (eg. shadow flickering in games that aren't supported properly) is a bonus too.

Really tempted to pull the trigger from France now. Obviously I can't link, but if you got to HDUK and search for the 980Ti you'll see the one I mean. It's the EVGA SC model for £476 plus £7 postage.

Hey chap I've just had a similar situation. I was running 2 7950s in crossfire and they were OK but out of the blue got a nice gift from in laws so after posting on here the main reply was 980 ti all the way. It was the same card you looking at I think and it was not cheap but if it keeps me going for a few years that will do fine. Unfortunately I got the card cheaper from another retailer..just waiting to sell my 7950 s and then the bad boy goes in....

Yeah it looks mint. Just can't work out if I should get the EVGA from France, or play it safe and get the Zotac Amp from here. Same price more or less, but I'm reading that some are having heat issues with the Zotac so I can't decide. £500 is a LOT for a single PC component, but I already have a buyer lined up for my 670s (£150) and it should last me a long time. I've the first 670 since 2012 I think, so they've served me well...
