Is a 980ti really not going to cut it for 1440p anymore?

And folk say Nvidia don't gimp older cards... awww.....sweet.

That was a tongue in cheek statement which i pointed out later if u read on? I was taking a shot at people saying 980Ti doesn't cut it anymore where as its faster than any 1070 when overclocked. Only faster cards are 1080 and Titan XP. Problem is ports are terrible and not optimised that well meaning at 1440p performance just doesn't seem there. It's just as bad AMD side at 1440p.

It's not necessarily the gpu.

Honestly, as a long time gamer who always likes to have a high end GPU, my advice is to stop playing AAA games at launch. There are precious few that ship without a number of showstoppers, and they tend to end up being pretty well optimised after a couple of months worth of patching. The experience is much more enjoyable overall at that point, not to mention cheaper.

Patience is the hallmark of a happy PC gamer. There is a massive, high quality catalogue to play through - there's never been a platform with so much rich content - so why waste time and money on the latest and not so greatest?

I couldn't of said it better myself this is 100% what I do, just to add the more people do this the more developers will release finished products at launch. If people keep paying for unfinished products then they will only be more than happy to sell it to you

Quite agree, these days most releases are riddled with issues. You're better off waiting for the bugs to be fixed even if that takes 6 months. Games are supposed to be entertaining not annoy you. So yeah, just wait until reviews become good :)
