Is a 980ti really not going to cut it for 1440p anymore?

Cutting the puerile crap, yes, you're spot on. Having said that I do notice drops to 40 quite badly in Mankind Divided, even with G-sync. Maybe it's because the FPS is so inconsistent in that game.

Yeah but (and i'm probably pointing out whats already been said) its a very poorly ported game and shouldn't be the benchmark for any gpu testing

On a train at the moment so apologies if it was already mentioned, Planet Coaster performance is heavily based towards the CPU. Which makes sense giving the thousands of peeps and their path making, needs and decisions being calculated.

A 980ti may be a match for a 1070 at the moment, but a year or so down the line it will change. Nvidia stop optimising the drivers for the older gen cards.

A year or so down the line, the 1170/80 will be available and the 980ti will have been in service for 3-4 years... So while your statement is factually correct, I'm not convinced it's relevant.

It does seem the recent games coming out which are multi platform just don't play well with the PC...

Seriously tempted to get a PS4 :(

Thats been the thought of many.. why bother with PC when i could just get a console. Problem is even consoles have FPS issues in some games and if i had to choose between drops on pc down to 40-50ish or consoles that drops from 30 to 20 i would prefer a pc.

Got Deus Ex 2 days ago.. it's like the new Crysis to get running especially at max settings.

It's the ONLY game I have that can't run solid 60FPS on anything higher than medium settings for 4K (par those without SLI support).

This. Plus now that the 1070 and 1080 have 8GB VRAM, developers are increasing VRAM usage, so the 980ti's won't be able to have max textures for long.

I have a 980Ti and game at 1440p (165hz) and everything runs amazing, will add another 980Ti one day when needed but that won't be for a long time imo.

Just because a game uses a certain amount of VRAM, doesn't necessarily mean it needs it.

True. I find it strange that I've seen VRAM usage of folks with 1080's at 3.5GB in BF1, though I suppose it depends on the level. By the time VRAM is an issue both the 980 Ti and 1070 will have run out of grunt.

It makes you wonder if they do it deliberately to try and boost GPU sales of the newest cards

Of course they do. I've no doubt that a 980Ti is considerably better than a 7 series etc, however I'm pretty sure games (especially ones with GPU sponsorships etc) aren't optimised well as they could be in the hope it makes the user buy a new card.
