So i've been wondering for a while if Google chromebook is efficient enough for the price and worth getting. I've read and looked up reviews, and somewhat are mixed, so cant make my mind up.

The general use for it would be, basic internet browsing, programming and watching movies, just wondering if it runs most software nicely or does it vary on speed?

If anyone has past experience of owning one, would be nice to hear your story :)

isnt it a requirement to always to connected? as it has no local storage.

what prpgramming do you do, and is it all through on remote servers?

Not sure and its just university, atm Java,PHP and what not, I just need to know if the speed is enough for simple stuff like this, obviously not gaming etc. just browsing

chromebooks are basically for consumption.

if you want to develop code, and use it to support an engineering degree then you need a proper laptop.

Chromebook are best viewed as tablets with keyboards that aren't a 3rd-party option. They are great as long as you understand what the issues are.

It doesn't run most software nicely at all, because it's not Windows or Mac OS. I suggest you buy a platform that your university course recommends you use, if a list doesn't exist then a 13" MacBook Air is always a good choice.

what Caged said.

I wouldn't dismiss it too quickly. Install ubuntu on it and use that new Chrome extension then you have ubuntu running side by side with chrome OS. Perfect for development.

If you get a nice one like the new Toshiba I think it'll be fine. You can even upgrade the RAM/SSD on a lot of the models.

For coding I assume you'd use linux, unless you're going to pay Apple prices for a macbook, then you might as well take advantage of the price benefit of the Chromebooks.

When my old Thinkpad finally die I think I'd buy a Chromebook next time.

We are looking at chromebooks as a one to one device in the school I work at. Got some major worries about them. But the powers that be like them. Mainly because they startup in 2 seconds. Tad faster than network secured machines.

They are a nice idea. If you just want to write documents, surf the net.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd pop in here.

I'm eyeing up a chromebook, use will mainly be light work (documents, spreadsheets) and Internet browsing. However, it would be awesome if it could run football manager too. Apparently you can install Linux on them and then steam, but was wondering which was the best chromebook for this usage? Only looking to spend 200 odd.

Chromebook spec's really have not changed much since they released them. There are new models from Asus and Acer that have AC wifi finally. The intel cpu one appears to perform the best too. Google Asus chromebook AC wifi. Can't remember the model number off the top of my head.

honestly I would steer clear of chrome books, I would rather take one of these windows 8.1 tablets and external keyboard rather than a chrome book. If its for university I would take a windows laptop( preferred) or apple mac if price is no iisue, if you cant afford a laptop then you could get one of these cheap 8-11" windows tablet with external keyboard and buy a cheap monitor and you are away.

There are good prices to be had on the bay and dell outlet.

but chrome book, no way too restrictive apart from only browsing.
