I setup a simple file server for my dad years ago, and its still going. its a pentium 4 dell optiplex 260 running windows XP, all it does is share file for 4 pcs, its backups to a network hard drive, and also backsup to sugar sync cloud.

now the network hard drive has died , I did post about a new NAS box, but would a second hand desktop pc with a couple of windows mirrored drives be better, since its backed up to sugarsync anyway..

or just get a usb hdd and back up that as before (rather than a network hdd)

I'm aware that windows xp security wise might be an issue, although there are no users actual using this pc it just sits on a shelf

I certainly wouldn't want to use XP, surely if you are getting another second hand PC. It will likely have Win 7 as a minimum?

Have you calculated the cost of keeping this PC on and so forth, might be more worthwhile as a long term investment to get a NAS.

Install linux on it and set up a samba server. It'll probably be quicker and you can update linux when you need to for security patches. WinXP is no longer supported and is therefore a liability IMO.

my fellow dorks, I will consider all your points, and decide what to do... but not tonite..
