i am wanting a laptop and me bro and another mate has a mx11 and mx18 (older modles.) is it worth getting an aleinware mx14 or is there other laptops just as good. i like the customise option on the alienware. any advice is good :D

i have an m17x r3 and love it...sad but true :)
can't fault the build quality, seen the guts when i installed my ssd.

AW M17 and M18 are great bits of kit, able to pick up cheap from the outlet.

Love my M11x all in £490 (Before adding my own kit).

Regards.

I really want a M11x and am looking for a well priced second hand one... want it for netbooking and mobile gaming (a bit)... also thinking of getting a BackTrack Linux distro and use the processing power to make more fun learning to hack my best friend's home network to wind him up :D For the money of a secondhand M11x you can get a lot of power for not many monies

I also want an M18x - one of only two 18" laptops still being made and sold and I use a laptop for movies and iPlayer for TV and a PC that I can play the latest games on, so it's either a acer 8951 AND a gaming PC total cost would be slightly more than the M18x

So Alienware have thier plus points and negative points - ie that if you don't shop around for discount codes or ask for deals on the phone you might pay more than you need to.

Aye just keep popping your head in once in a while from what most have posted before 1200hrs - 1400hrs are generally good times to look.

Alienware laptop are very good, you should be able to get 15-25% off by using a discount code and a cash back site. Also you should get the minimum ram and hard drive option as dell charge a lot for upgrades, you can then upgrade the ram and hard drive yourself much cheaper.

I highly recommend you go and check one out in person first.

I did and it made all the difference - I didnt end up placing an order for one.

In person it looks even more silly than in the photos, like some cheap plastic toy. I cannot stress enough how cheap and tacky the finish is. The soft touch adds some elegance but ultimately it's wasted as a) it's not a very good execution of the soft touch, b) everything else around it looks so bad

The keyboard is also very poor imho, far too little depress and far too much resistance. Plus for a 17" laptop the keys are a little thin and small.

The display was very poor and extremely reflective. Even on the brightest setting there was still far too much reflection in a not even brightly lit room.

And finally, it sounds like a jet turbine when the fans are on max.
