Is an external power supply for a desktop PC even worth considering?

Over time, I have gradually removed bits from my desktop, to the extend that it probably uses very little power, now:

i3-2105
mATX motherboard
1x120mm exhaust fan
USB mouse and Keyboard
USB stick (occasional use)
USB Steinberg External Sound Card (occasional use)
Single DVI monitor
2 x SSD
2 x 4GB RAM

This is all being powered by Antec 400w high current gamer PSU.

For the vast majority of the time the PC is on, it is used for browsing and word processing.

I know that I am using only a fraction of the PSU's total power for 95% of the time, which means that it is operating pretty inefficiently (especially, given that it was not a particularly efficient PSU to begin with).

Is there any point at all in even considering an external PSU power brick?

They seem pretty expensive for what they are and whilst you also get the benefit of one less fan to deal with, they do seem that the cost would almost never be recouped by the saving electricity.

Has anyone else considered this?

Thanks, Quartz.

Really interesting point - I am actually pretty tempted by that.

Did you mean NUCs specifically or mini desktops in general?

How would these device compare to current set-up - could they also run something like Cubase?
