Is an upgrade from a 3200+ single core to a 3800+ dual core worth it?

Hi,
I have a bit of money and Im toying with the idea of going dual core. Im on a budget but I can stretch the budget. I mean I dont want to spend a lot but is a 3800+ worth it?
Do they clock well aswell. My 3200+ went up to 2.6Ghz!
I game a lot but I dont go for super fast gaming and high textures. I just want to boost my FPS and overalll speed.

Well I am in the same situation apart from my 3200+ can hit 2.8ghz before my memory packed in.

I am thinking the same as you ... dual core 3800+ from 3200+.

The thing is the 3800+ DC is basically 2x3200+ cores. Its up to you but I would consider buying a 2GB kit of RAM :)

So, is it worth it?
:p
I dont think I need another gig of RAM, I dont think it will improve my gaming experience much. Maybe it will. Dont really know.

got my x2 3800 running at 2.4ghz at the moment, have a look at my x2 3800 OC's thread for some examples of what people are getting (it's usually on the first page of this forum section someplace).

general concensus is that you can get 2.4-2.6 on air usually, up to about 2.8ish on water, and maybe 3+ on phase with these chips. the 06 steppings are even better I think, got an older E4 manchester revision here.

For single threaded apps your 3200 will probably be very similar in performance, but for windows and other such things this chip is awesome. I can run media player, half life2, photoshop etc all at the same time, and get no slowdown at all really while switchin between em :)

and for multi threaded stuff it's obviously an awesome chip to have. for the cost of these chips at the moment i'd say it's definetly a good buy :O

IMO opinion it is a worthwhile upgrade.

Because the X2 can run background tasks it will be faster than your current CPU even in single threaded apps & be much better with (patched) dual core games & apps.

Shh please. That comment doesn't help the question at all so just dont answer next time ok?!

Im more thinking of the future when more dual core games come out.

MC_Bob

its true though.i think 'old wino' is right.... by the sound of that comment you only want to hear peole that say 'go for it its great'

i would wait a while, till more dual core games hit the market (by that time dual core prices should have dropped)

oh and conroe & AM2 is coming.

But the price he can get by selling his current chip will have dropped too.
Im upgrading from my 3000+ to a nice X2 3800+, should make everything a little more zippy :)

Good decision Mc_Bob ;)

Just a little post note though. 2Gig of RAM is the way to upgrade your current 'gaming' rig :D It does make a lot of difference in games ;)
