Had a chap come into my store today to return a mobile broadband dongle saying it was faulty, and we discovered he was running windows 2000. The lappy was one of those tall ones from the late 90s, but it got me thinking: does anyone here know anyone currently running an OS that old (or older:eek:)? Intentionally like, not because they were too skint to upgrade. It's just madness!

I believe my grandad is still using 2000, because the PC he has is an old one he was given by a friend just to check e-mails and the like, and upgrading the OS seems a bit un-necessary. With any luck though, I'll soon be giving him one of my previous PCs that is newer, and runs XP.

My mum still uses it, but I have a better one for you... I have an uncle still running NT4 and its running perfectly fine too. When I spoke to him about a fortnight ago, he said he has no intention of upgrading.

KLIA Express...

Was in Malaysia recently & sow that on the train. However I'm not surprised they are (still) running Windows 2000 because I can only imagine the costs to implement a new system/OS must be huge i.e. if it ain't broke...

Pretty sure the OS running in Heathrow/Gatwick airport is still Windows 95/98 for some of the screens which only display adverts.
Or at least this was the case 2 years ago.

Ah, that makes sense for businesses I guess. I gotta say I was impressed at the bootup time for an ancient machine, but I'd forgotten what it looked like. I think I skipped straight from 98 - xp

Quite a lot of places will still be running Windows 2000.

Oldest box I've got is running NT4 although its days are seriously numbered now.

Ewww I forgot what pre xp windows looked like recently... Well I accidentally turned on the classic option on whilst setting windows back up recently, and it looks terrible! Nothing beats my old win lite version of 2k (all 280mb of an os) as it didnt have ie in it at all :D, loved seeing what just couldnt quite cope with not having it there...

I use teh classic theme for everything... My win 7 PCs are classic theme

Funnily enough, when I was on wK as my main O/S, I spent my entire computer life trying to get it to look like XP and then, when I moved to XP, I used the Classic theme!

Go figure?

Place I work for.
I never really used it myself, went from 98SE to XP. Tried ME and that was one of the worst experiences of my life!

One of the most important machines in my job is running NT4 on 32Mb of ram, we keep telling the management that when it goes belly up, they'll have 24 hours to install a new machine and re-create the database otherwise the whole place will grind to a screeching halt.

They expect that they'll just be able to whack the software on a generic HP/Compaq machine running XP, copy the DB over and be done with.
Rofl, can't wait for it all to kick off.

I inherited mine, and I was scared of rebooting it just in case it didn't come back on. :D

In its defense though it had a big uptime and actually caused me the least trouble out of a bunch machines.

We still have one Windows 2000 server sat on our network.
We're now actively rolling out Server 2008 R2 64bit (where Linux isn't the better option) yet we've still got this old 2000 server chugging away.

However just today I've signed the papers....it's death is imminent :)

Few contracts where I work are still using windows 2000 Server and a few desktop clients are running Windows 2000 as well.

due to application support, managed to transfer some of this to Windows XP.

I remember using it at home for around a year and hated it. When Windows XP came along its like what Windows 7 is today.

Seems I tend to skip an O/S each time. Windows 95/98 - Windows 2000. Tried 2000 and pretty much gave up on it. Went to Windows XP instead. Windows Vista came along and hated that.. so skipped and went from Windows XP - Windows 7.

Was a machine in the local halifax branch using Windows NT 4.0 now that is old..!!

The last time I was round at some good friends (at the time) who were brothers with a very technical network with servers and what not they were all using NT4 or 2000! Granted this was about 5 years ago now. Was always pretty weird actually, it was like a setup at work but at home, they all had their own comuputers on the domain.

Just retiring an NT4 box with Citrix Termserver on it. Upgrading it to W2k8 on a new machine - what a difference!

I donated my AMD K6-2 450 box to a friend a while back but that was running Win2000 at the time, was only about five years ago but XP was dog slow on it.

If I got hold of a system of that spec again, i'd probably put 2000 on it over XP.
