Is anyone using a Specsavers hearing aid.

I went to hidden hearing for the free consultation once just so I didn't need to wait for the NHS, and to find out about private hearing aids.

The adverts I had clicked on said 'Private hearing aids from £20 each'.

The consultant said the cheapest ones would be £500 each going up to £5000.

I left, and unfortunately was spammed via mail, email and phonecall by hidden hearing for ages as their unsubscribe method was almost impossible.

there are currently trials happening to restore human hearing, i initial test results have been positive. Hearing aid shops must be bricking it!

My hearing is pretty ropey, probably because of years in noisy environments and racing unsilenced karts and cars. So that looks interesting, but also, for some reason, comes across as a slightly snake oil setup. No offence, it may be 110% legit.. It's something I have never come across before and a subject I know nothing at all about.

Thanks for the link, I hope they are on to something.

As for Specsavers, why the hell do they now have a hearing aid department? If you're deaf enough to warrant hearing aids like myself, then hearing tests and hearing aid provision should be carried out in a hospital setting.

That's where I first went years ago and they told me to go back to my GP to refer me to the hospital.
I ended up having Stapedectomy's and my hearing is superb.

My hearing aids (NHS) are Oticon Spirit Synergy BTE13. I'm happy with them, get tested at Stafford audiology (County Hospital) once every few years. They work well with my radio aids too (Roger Select) which I got from Access to Work.

The same goes with poor vision. I never go to an optician's as I always go to a hospital setting again.

Also, I highly doubt that Specsavers can prescribe a contact lens as powerful as -27.5, which is what I'm on!

NHS hearing aids look and sound crap. Mine do nothing but ring and whine endlessly, and I wouldn't want to even be found dead while wearing them.

They've been stuck at my parent's house for ages anyway. If I managed to get another job, I could get free private hearing aids using access to work funds.

Technically I needed cochlear implants, but no way I would be able to keep holes in the side of my head clean enough to prevent further complications.

There's no open holes.

After the surgery you wear a hearing aid with a magnet on a wire that communicates with the implant buried under your skin.

And what happens if that implant is as screwy as the hearing aids I already tried?

My inner ears are mostly dead, but the auditory nerves still work and annoyingly transfer excessive sound from inside my mouth due to being so unused. Id need implants to connect to the nerves to carry sound but this isn't anything serious enough for me to want surgery, and I enjoy silence.

My whole body is a failure anyway, fixing the ears isn't going to do much. If I do need my ears again if I find another job, I can get free private hearing aids.

Think you quoted wrong person, i was asking OP.

But yes when you are as blind and deaf as the pair of us, yes it makes sense to go to the hospital. :)

NHS hearing aids (well mine phonak) are fine! They sound as good as they are going to be, plus if you are deaf enough for a cochlear (I am almost there) then its not going to be sounding amazing, sounds like you need to ask them to put a feedback manager on though to stop the well feedback and whining. :)

How odd that some people think that being deaf is somehow hilariously funny , as a near completely deaf person myself I see this happening a lot.

So what if people find it funny? Id hurl more insults here but I'm pretty sure mods tolerance for me is non existent now.

When I last worked, simply asking customers 'could you repeat that for me please' would **** them off beyond anger, and they would scowl, get mad and storm off.

Nothing more happened, but it happened 3 times in total, and yes I was wearing my hearing aids which for some reason they didn't see.

There is far worse you can have to deal with than people on forums making jokes about hearing loss.

Also add the endless 'excuse me ... Excuse me ..... EXCUSE ME!!!!!...'. and 'Thank you.... THANK YOU .... I SAID THANK YOU!!!!!!11111111' By which point I'm already some 20 feet away from the person.

Just yet more clown world where everyone thinks hearing loss doesn't exist.

I've heard nothing but good things about the new generation bluetooth hearing aids. Got a couple of friends who use them and the ability to tune them yourself, use your phone as a directional microphone in busy places and even play music over them is remarkable.

This is just terrifying to look at though, just how much do they have to cut and dig into the head to get this in?

(Not allowed to direct embed I think).

Also I already got a £10 bluetooth earpiece for my better ear which barely works to allow me to hear phonecalls. Something like 90%+ loss in left ear, 50%+ in right (Audiologists wont give percentages because it doesnt work like that, but that's how it feels).

I've got a device that transmits TV sound direct to my hearing aids using the telecoil setting, even using that I still need subtitles on. My hearing is also distorted so I cannot listen to music anymore as it sounds out of tune :(

People should straight up complain to the manager and get deaf people sacked for not hearing them whinge whine and moan while shopping at Tesco and their baby's favourite flavour of baby formula is out of stock.

I would love another retail job. Hearing loss badge, reasonable adjustments, ignore customers, only be able to hear their screams and crying.

Hearing aids and spectacle frames are huge money earners, especially hearing aids, a real rip off that needs addressing somehow. Prices are obscene for the technology and packaging.
I wonder if its a similar thing to Spec frames, as in all the brands are actually owned by one company. I hope medically eye correction d hearing restoration become a norm. I would feel zero sympathy for those rip off scum bags going out of business.

The price of them are pretty eye watering. Until they become available on the NHS they’ll be out of reach for many people.
