hey guys,

im buying a windows 8.1 licence and seen a key on a well known auction site for £39.99, it seems 100% legit with hundreds or good feedback, but what i want to know it, if i was to build a new system in say 9months, can i use the same key? or will it be tied to my current system?

thanks

Depends on the version you buy. If you buy a retail key then you should be able to build, rebuild, etc. as many times as you like. If you buy an OEM key it's tied to the motherboard.

I'd be careful about using auction sites, etc. as they've sold MSDN keys in the past and they eventually get blocked. They may work for a couple of months but they then may be blocked and there's not a lot you can do about it.

If the seller is selling keys that are "grey market", and not through supported MS channels, as said there is a possibility the key will become blocked from activation. The chance is probably quite small, but still there. Of course, you can always work around activation issues (naughty), but is just seems like paying for a hooky version of Windows to me...

Windows isn't that expensive, considering the use you will get out of it

You seem to have convinced yourself Beasty :)

Why/how would the seller check if these are 100% legit? I am not saying they aren't, just that there would be no reason

If you buy one and 6 months down the line it does not reactivate, you have 2 choices

1. Crack it.
2. Buy another

In scenario 1, you could save yourself £40 in the first place, I doubt MS will see much/any of that money anyway

In scenario 2, you're out £80 with another potential time bomb OS. Could have bought a legit retail copy to begin with

Well it says in the description that they key is checked with MS support service before being sent to you

Why not buy the key,Then contact M$ and ask them to validate the key you have been given to make sure everything is legit..if its not you can report them while your there and claim your money back via Paypal or however you pay.

I made a mistake before buying a Windows 8 Key from Ebay,It was £29 iirc..it activated fine and worked for months then all of a sudden "This version of windows is not genuine" so i contacted M$ and they said the key had been blacklisted..i still got my money back via Paypal claim even after that amount of time so i was lucky really.

Ended up just buying a proper Retail version.

I would bet money on this being an MSDN key which could be invalidated at any time. The 100% feedback is because it works to start off with and people submit good feedback. 6 months later when their copy of Windows stops working they can't change their feedback.

Buy from a proper retailer.

This is what happens with cheap keys.

This means nothing, all it is doing is checking that it will authenticate. Once MS notices they keys are being sold they can and do remove them, so they will no longer authenticate.

At least go to g2a.com where they're about £9, so you waste less money. Or just buy a proper version.

Since win8. OEM is retail, can be installed as many times as you want, it is not tied to motherboard.

The only license still restricted, is ones that come preinstalled on a computer. Not any you can buy and install yourself.
