Is Apple 4k TV the way to go?

I think that's the only time I notice any real difference is dark areas where you sometimes get the artifacting, but other than that watching a film I rarely notice.

I'll still buy the 4K disc for films I absolutely love or want to ensure I'm getting the best experience from, but for 99% of films, they still look incredible on the Apple TV, especially with Dolby Vision content. I was blown away at the job Apple have done with the streaming quality

I agree with Vertigo1 to some extent but I can see the other point of view its personal preference. No harm in the difference.
Now Steedie give us £200 and I will buy an Apple TV and see if you are right !

No.. I waiting for when I buy an OLED TV and then see what appz the TV has built-in

Netflix and amazon prime most likely, iTunes will never be integrated unless Apple release a full TV.

Netflix streaming is garbage quality, artifacting and noise all over the place plus some very dodgy HDR metadata in their own shows. Star Trek Destiny looks atrocious.

Amazon streaming has been the highest quality I’ve found so far from streaming. The Grand Tour looks excellent and so do some of their older catalogue films. They get a lot that hasn’t seen bluray too.

4K movies on iTunes are fairly decent, especially Dolby vision ones if your TV supports it.

All of them are not as good as a 4K bluray. You can check this out yourself using the digital codes that come with the disks to save you multiple purchases. A 4K bluray can be up to 100gb of video and the difference in detail is very noticeable. Also most 4K blurays ship with atmos / dtsX object based audio if you have that. Most of the streams don’t and apple doesn’t currently support it on their 4K box

Here we go again  ;) :D

Apple productions are still limited versus netflix/amazon so investing in the streaming infrastructure and apps not yet needed.

are you viewing in hdr10 or dolby vision ? presumably it is not dropping down to lower bitrate(dash) streams for you.
I thought Star Trek Discovery (?) poor quality was down to CBS licensing limiting it to 1080

Also depends on which version of the Netflix app you are using as there is a lot of variety.
I think Netflix looks fine on my BT Box but thats just UHD no HDR.
If I view it on my Samsung Player its got HDR and its way to bright. If I look at Max Mad its bright but compliments the picture. Watching something like Jessica Jones hurts your eyes.

Netflix uses Dolby vision and HDR, but most series seem to use the former. The Marvel stuff for example. I had to calibrate differently for both and half the OLED light level for Dolby vision vs. the full whack for HDR. Might be worth giving it a go.

You only get Dolby Vision if the Netflix player app and HW supports it. BT TV and Sammy 4k player Netflix doesnt have DV. Only the Samsung has Netflix with HDR. I view Netflix on the BT TV box as its more convenient. HDR/DV dont impress me that much and I can actually live without it.

I’m really happy with the Apple TV 4K. I see little difference between it and 4K discs and not having to sit through menus, adverts and piracy notifications is so much better.

Now it’s been updated to auto adjust the output it’s even better.

So let me get this right.
Lets take a recent film, say Baby Driver (as I haven't seen this yet and its supposed to be pretty good).
So assuming you have an Apple TV 4K (I don't currently) To watch this in 4K the choices are.
1. Buy the 4k Blu-ray (£16.50) at Amazon, or.
2. Buy the HD film on iTunes for £6.99

Will the second option essentially allow me to download the HD film to any linked apple device (i.e. iPad/iPhone/Apple TV etc.) and assuming I purchase an Apple TV 4K will it then allow me to stream this in 4K?

Thanks

Or you can do what most of us do and buy a digital code for it, it cost me $3.

You can download and watch on the iMac, iPad, iPhone but only in HD.
