Is Becks Proper German Beer?

Reinheitsgebot doesn't exist anymore afaik.

While it has lost its original legal standing, and the Germans cannot use it to keep out foreign beers, most German beers brewed in Germany for Germans still follow it. However, the vast majority of "German" beers sold in this country are as German as the Queen. That is, made in this country. A small amount of the genuine article finds its way over here so they can say: "Brewed in Germany and the UK", but the Germany bit applies to about 1%. Similar is true of things like Carlsberg and Guinness. Importing beer is pretty inefficient if you sell a lot of the stuff, so popular beers are pretty much brewed entirely in this country, no matter what country of origin is stamped on the bottle/can. Especially can.

Its certainly is. You can buy single bottles of Augistiner for £2.09 from beers of europe or £40 a case which isnt to bad considering its 20 500ml bottles.

Id say as pilsners go my favourite is Paulaner, shame tesco only do the wheat beer paulaner now :(

Yes theirs' is a good site, the problem is persuading the missus I need to part with £40 up front to buy some beer. Still I guess it's cheaper than Eurostar/Thalys/ICE to Munich to buy in person!

I actually emailed Asdsa and Sainsbury re expanding their German beer range beyond the wheat beers. Sainsbury weren't interested but Asda said they would look into it. Tesco don't have a contact email per se. The local Safeway round here has turned into Morrisons so all they stock is Becks and the ubiquitous Erdinger.

Also agree on the Paulaner, we got a few crates in this week from the local market - good Weissbier that!
