Is Brixton really that bad?

Nice to see a lot of responses, so thankyou.

Any more suggestions about where to flat hunt? I love high streets like Putney/Brixton - lots of varied shops from McDonalds to Topshop and that is what i am after. Basically, a flat next to a large high street that isn't too run down. :p

I used to live in Stockwell (within earshot of the underground station) and I was glad to get out of there since it ended up being filled with yobs burning down the road on their scooters and playing music loudly plus the local fuzz won't give a hoot if your mugged which is what happened to me in the entrance of the block I used to live in (plus if memory serves weren't some kids killed in the stockwell/brixton area a few years ago).

I used to live in Camberwell and walked around Coldharbour lane a few times late at night. I didn't have any issues. I saw the odd brothel which you might consider a bonus depending how you think about it!

The Cheeky Chick in Camberwell was a redeeming feature but this has closed down. The Golden Grill is still going though :) :)

I grew up in the area and still live close by. I've never had any trouble there but you have to remember it's still got crime problems and you can't own anything nice there. It will get stolen, your car (if you have one) will get knocked into and scratched and as a borough I find Lambeth is VERY unpleasant. The problem is all the scum that used to live there have just been pushed into the surrounding areas like Streatham and Stockwell. They are effectively still there and you still have to pay for their problems through your council tax.

Don't get unwell there either, Kings College has to be one of the most unpleasant, dirty hospitals in the country and the ward staff are awful.
