I did some web searching for i7 air coolers but there wasn't many options available. After much searching I found the coolermaster v8 that can supposedly mount to my evga x58. Comparing this to other options in air cooling it seemed like the best product as far as getting consistently good customer reviews.

I would like to reach 4.0, or 4.2ghz stable. I was wondering if that was even possible with this cooler. I have heard of people getting that with air tho but not sure what they were using.

Does anyone have one of these coolers that can give me some temp readings?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just think the noctua's are hideous. I did spend quite a bit on appearance as it is, so while that is not my number one priority, I don't want to intentionally put something that ugly in my case.

btw- thanks for the link. If there is only going to be a 3c difference, I'm glad i bought the v8, it at least doesn't have a brown fan. Best or not, it still looks like crap...imo.

Change the fan if your that bothered...

I'm sure you could mix and match with fans of the same spec (but better looking of course). That is my only criticism of the Noctua too.

Well just got it in the mail, and it looks bad a$$. I will post my temps later as I won't get home till 6pm est. Also I was looking for help with artic silver 5. drop, line, smear? I posted in the proper thread if anyone wants to help me out there.

I think not many people are using it because its fairly new and most of the vets stick with the tried and tested noctua, etc.

If your going for 4+ gig it should handle it fine but you might need to replace the stock fan which seems to be geared for quiet rather than performance.

Personally after a couple of mods for better airflow I was unable to get my Q6600 even at 1.65vcore and 3.825gig over 58-59C so I rate it pretty well... it also looks mean especially with the red lighting... I might post a pic later of the setup I'm using it in :D

Yeah the Noctua maybe the best air cooler to date for i7 however it looks hidious, i'd get the v8 anyday of the week over a Noctua purely on appearance & performance.
On air i think you could hit 4ghz no problems, but 4.2ghz stable i doubt with decent temps.

Have a pop at the smear technique. Most people seem to have success with this method.

its paste, it gets squished when you put it on :o

the only 'trick' is making sure you dont put too much on. there's no special credit card techniques, no smearing, no fine tooth combing that will make it any better or any worse, unless you think how you apply it will make a difference when its squished down to a few microns in depth......

put a blob in the middle and be done with it.

thats proven to be incorrect mate, the pressure of HS is realative to the amount of the blob. smearing takes that factor out and only leaves how much to apply. Not saying it makes massive diff was just saying your comment was incorrect (in non offensive way) :D

Well I get off work in an hour and I will post temps.

currently i idle around 60-65 each core maxed out at 70-80 each core. I know that's hot but I swear that when I went back to stock clock, the temps did not drop but maybe 3c both ways.

Also customer reviews on coolermaster v8 say that it does not come with 1366 socket installation instructions though it's easy enough to figure out. Well maybe Coolermaster is a good company then because they must have listened because mine DID come with mounting instructions for the 1366 socket along with thermalFusion 400 compound but something tells me to stick with the artic silver 5.

I put a small blob about the grain of rice in the middle and drop the HS on top.

Temps have drop since i used to smear the paste.
