Is Coolermaster Wavemaster suitable for Prescott 3.8

A friend of mine just migrated to AMD, and I picked up his 3.8 prescott (which overclocks nicely to 4.4), 2gig Corsair DDR400 kit, and a Saphire LGA775 Crosfire mobo (which actually takes ordinary DDR) for only 200 euro. Couldn't resist. Now my local PC store has Hiper 580w psu's and Coolermaster Wavemaster cases on sale and I already got my mits on a decent HDD and a cheap 1800XT there too.

I really like the design of this Wavemaster case, and I see OcUK sell it in their extreme system, the fastest P4 being the 3.6 version. I am just wondering will the Wavemaster be enough to cool this hot cpu overclocked. (I plan to use an Arctic Cooler 7 Pro). Are the fans on this case noisy ? Should I remove the top section and replace with another 80mm fan to help cool the cpu ?

the stock fans are noisy, i voltmodded mine so they were quieter, i had a freezer 64 pro on my amd 4000+ and the case provided sufficient cooling

Hi mate,

They are awesome cases (I own one myself) but the cooling isn't up to scratch for extreme overclocking. Yewen may be able to offer more advice here, as he seems to be our resident case expert.

Replace the stock fans ASAP seems to be the general consensus round here. I've got three Akasa Ambers on order, as well as a Zalman VF900 for my 7800GT. Also using the Freezer 64 CPU cooler.

I've never had ANY issues with heat in this case, but the stock fans are noisy and well worth replacing (I'm looking forward to a quieter case when I get my Ambers installed)

Thanks for the advice. I wonder are the front stock fans easy to get at, as I remember I had a Coolermaster 201 I think, and those fans were a pita to get out. I suppose another alternative is a fan controller. Are the stock fans 3 pin jobs ?

stock fans have molex connectors, its a bit of a mission to get to the front ones, you have to unscrew the bottom of the front bit, take off the door and then you have access to the front fans

The stock fans DB:CFM ratio is one of the worst you can buy, think delta without the extreme airflow and you would be getting there :p

On air the case could be a little toasty, but if you do not mind the slightly inflated temperatures then it will be fine.

The killer for a overclocked rig in this case is the hard drives, if you are running mroe than two you really need to mount them in Silenmaxx enclosures, or something similar, otherwise the heat from the bank of drives will really increase the ambient case temperature a lot.

But the case should cope fine, will be 3/4 hotter than say a Eclipse or a PC7 though, but nothing it should not be able to handle, there is always the option of fitting 2x 80mm at the back, or buying a Prae 7** motherboard tray which already has it.

It is a very nice case, modified the top blowhole on mine today :D

How do you fit 2X80mm's at the back mate? Does it involve cutting a hole?

And is it possible to fit one 120mm fan for the fron intake near the hard drives?

It does indeed need holes, just search google for 201 mods or you could buy a Prae 732 and use its motherboard tray ;)

The 120mm front I have never seen the need to, as 80mm work fine in that case, doing anything else with a 120mm fan may cause more problems than it is worth.

And to the pictures, wait until it is done, if you search for a thread called a new case for yewen you will see what I am trying to do :)

Doesn't the wavemaster have the option to disconnect all the usb gubbins on the top panel and replace with an 80mm fan ?

I am really tempted to get this case now....I happen to have some Akasa ambers hanging around too. But again, I am worried will I be able to run a 1900XTX in this case and an overclocked Prescott.

Also - do you need special tools to replace the 2x80mm fans ?

<edit> I am running just 1 HDD - one of the new 400gig WD sata 2 jobs </edit>

No to the tools.

The system you are saying is probably going to be on the thermal limit for this case, so you will not be able to make it silent while cooling the case, but if this is going to be a issue then you need to look at a case that has a more modern design like a Eclipse / PC7 or a V series.

But I am quite sure it will handle the components, but as I say it may get a little toasty.

The fan choice will probably be quite important, so remember to factor into the cost the price of 4x ambers.

Ahh makes it a bit better.

Random question here, but do you know how much hotter over stock the Prescott is running, I may be able to work out if it will be fine or not.

Unfortunately the thermal sensors on the Sapphire board are not worth a damn as they report the thing runs at over 70 when idle.

However according to the iSpec on Intels site, it's a 3.8ghz 90nm part and it puts out up to 115w and has a thermal ceiling of 72.8 degrees. (This is kind of surprising as the newer 3.4 950 presler dual core actually output 130w- probably the 2 cores of course). Anyway, the 3.8 is probably running as hot as an FX57. I coud live without overclocking it in the wavemaster. Going into this case initially will be 1 x ATI X1800XTX stock cooling, 2gigs ram, 1 hdd, 1 optical, 1 card reader, xi-fi, and I wil be using a Hiper 580w modular psu, and for cooling either an Arctic Cooler 7 Pro or Coolermaster Vortex TX
