Is Crysis a reason to upgrade?

ATi 4000 series is rumoured to be out late Q2.

But no real info on what they are, from the naming schemes it does look like a highly tweaked 3870 refresh with more shaders.

Intresting to note that the RV770 4870XT looks to have about the same performance as a current 3870X2 tho, 1TFlop.

No, waste of time upgrading, as the cards we have can not run it well, so why upgrade to another card that can not run it well, no point, save your money, and why would you want to buy 14 month old cards now anyway, besides Crysis is only 1 game, its the only game that can not be ran well, and its not the only game out there, these cards cope with every other game on the planet fine. :)

why not just wait - new tech is round the corner - start putting your pennies away for a bit and you can get a nice new card when they are released
im making do with my sig specs until the time is right to upgrade

you KNOW there is nothing that will run crysis maxed so dont insight a flamewar- just wait a bit - its always the case - it always will be

you seem to be posting like you have a serious case of "yeah, but..." syndrome

Thats the whole point. It's because I know what I am talking about which

makes this thread a topic for discussion.

The new cards are offering very little in terms of perfromance over the current Gen.

So why do I want a nice new card when they are relaased..as you put it?

just leave it out
10k+ posts must mean you know what you are doing so why create a thread like this

i could understand if you were new and were looking for advice...

If you don't wish to discuss the GFX arena then don't post.

Agreed, but thats because they aint new cards, and they are still this current gen, namely 8800's, they've been around since 2006, everyone knows that the 9800 GTX just being an overclocked 8800 GTS is going to be a small performance increase, you may a well buy the GTS and do it yourself and save about a hundred quid, which they'll no doubt slap on just for the overclock and the extra SLi connector. :)

If the 9800GT and GTX scale as well as the 9600GT does in SLI (90% in COD4 and Bioshock) then that's definitely the way forwards. It also suggests that the GX2 could be a stonking single card solution.

It's a real shame that the SLI boards aren't the best, although I read about one the other day that's an Intel chipset and takes 2 quads.............mmmmmmmm................

As single cards they don't seem to offer much extra though.

Well, looking at the Crysis Chart, there are a few Averaging over *60* frames per second, with one poster getting into the "70's" with minimum at 40, and max at 95 frames!. If that's not playable (or more than), then i think people are asking for more than they can actually get. Can't see you on that list Easy? - maybe you've "benched" but couldn't make it to the "Top Slot", and couldn't accept anything else?

Not sure how that benchmark translates once in-game though....

well you are suggesting you want an upgrade
so wait until something is out with enough performance gain to upgrade

you are clearly trying to get some kind of argument going which i am not here to do

im trying to tell you that the only thing you can do if you want an upgrade is to wait for whatever flagship card comes next.

i AM discussing GFX with you - thats why i put my point across - but to be told that i shouldnt post by you is a bit much

especially when you are bringing up a topic like crysis where everybody is fully aware that it wont run maxed on current tech

Imo no one game is reason enough to upgrade. I know a lot of people did before crysis came out and got sorely dissapointed as the poorly coded pos was making the majority of systems look laughable.

Agreed i almost brought into the hype glad i never waiting for next gen now

To be fair if the next gen cards were out when everyone thought they be like nov last year would we be having all those threads.
when i got my 320 in feb/march 07 a lot of people thought/hoping ( i was one) nov 07 was when next gen could be and would be out if they had been crysis mightn't have got such a negative response.
A lot of people would have just upgraded

I think it is worth ugrading just for crysis as crysis gives us an idea how future games may perform.

agreed 100%
but...
point is that the op runs a gtx
now there are only two single card solutions above that performance wise
and neither of them would be worth the trade in

he is looking for a gain in crysis that simply wont happen for a bit yet

I would add only if a lot of games use crysis engine if not then maybe no,if most games use Ut engine or what ever it is then maybe no and it depends what card you got as well if you maxing out the res on your monitor with a lot of Aa's on almost all games apart from crysis is it worth it?.
As myself i played it and finished it and willn't go back to it for ages so i can wait until next gen are out as i using a hdtv anyway.

No I don't

I think you will find that a GTX will struggle to get 17k in 06.

Thats your perception.

For everybody else we are discussing GFX cards.

Is Crysis a reason to upgrade?
Depends how much you want a system that can play a game with high-end Crysis visuals, do you need that e-peen extension?

I didn't think Crysis was that great a game, all it has going for it is the graphics. For me, I'd say it definately isn't worth upgrading for.
There will be others that want it playable at max settings and if it's what they want, then fair play.

I was asked today by a colleague about upgrading his PC so he can play Crysis on High detail. I told him wait 18 months as current GFX just don't cut it let alone being able to run future DX10 titles at playable frame rates.

I'm making my judgement from the minimum FPS and don't tolerate slowdown.
