This was exactly what I thought of as well. Although I do not have an x38 board. just the p35. would it matter? my p35c-ds3r can support DDR3 1333
bimmerboii If you can afford the DDR3, keep your board. In the near future if you want to upgrade your board to an x38/48 you will have the option minus the memory.
Snip DDR3 is not a waste of money as soon DDR3 will become more common and DDR2 will become obsolete, just like DDR1,
An excellent example, peoples aversion to DDR2 back then is the same attitude, opinion reflected towards DDR3 now.
DDR2 prices have dropped dramatically, but last year prices (even 9 months ago) for 8500 (2x1) were near £200 and 6400 (2x1) was near £150 and people were paying the money. So on reflection the cheapest DDR3 is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-133-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=923 is £176.24 inc vat. Which is cheaper than i paid for 2x1 OCZ 8500 Sli memory and i paid near £400 for (4x1). So under that assumption i was willing to pay that money i most certainly would pay for the higher DDR3 1800Mhz even if it is for only (2x1) a difference of £105.75 of the above linked DDR3 inc vat. As i use XP pro and over clock i don't require 4 sticks.
As RaiderX points out:Snip obviously the DDR3 might have more use in the future...
Snip if you get DDR3, you wont have any more memory limits you can get the max your chip has to offer, .
45nm wolfdale and yorkies as well as larger cores support 1333 vs Kentsfield 1066 as RaiderX further points out:
Snip i wouldnt get DDR3 to run at 1333MHz, i would be running it at a minimum of 1600MHz
Snip By the time DDR3 is at better prices, there will be newer chipsets out.
45nm has been released, X48 mother boards are due http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-262-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1050 chip set supports DDR3, 790i mother boards due for release shortly support DDR3 only
Eventually motherboards will only support DDR3. Technology moves forward not backwards. Eventually board manufactures will produce boards not supporting DDR2, but DDR3 its a business.
If you have the money available and are willing why invest in old when the new is available?
