is DDR3 worth it?

The AMD cpus run slightly better on AM3 boards only like 3-5% so you probably wouldn't notice much as its equal to like 1-2 fps. I'd so go for the ddr3 if you think you will be upgradeing the cpu etc in the 2 maybe 3 years otherwise go for ddr2 and just get a motherboard for the next chipset type when you come to upgrade.

Is the budget AM2 board you are looking at up to the processor you are planning? Some of the Quads really draw too much juice for the cheap AM2 boards. I would never pair a 100W+ processor with a £50 board as they just aren't designed for that, especially if you then look at overclocking. By the time you get a better AM2+ board (around £80-£100) then you aren't a million miles away from a cheap AM3 board like this:

The cost of the memory is not too bad now and you would be safe in the knowledge that if you upgrade the system in 12-24 months you will be able to use your current parts.

If you are building a Dual Core gaming machine though then this isn't a problem so I would just get a cheap system (£50-£70 processor, £50 motherboard and DDR2) with a view to saved money meaning an upgrade sooner :)

im using a tri core processor so its prety good. the am3 board im going for is 115. could i get a decenmt am2 board for much less? the ram i can get $30 cheaper. will ddr2 ram work on am3 board? thanks
