is E6600 worth twice as much as E6300?

E6300 is about 100 quid, whereas E6600 is 200, is it really worth spending twice as much?

I'm guessing they're essentially the same processor, just not as good performance and different cache?

I personally would buy the 6300 over 6600 because of both the price difference and the fact that the 6300 can be quite easily overclocked to 6600 levels with the right motherboard, RAM and cooler :)

yeah but the same argument goes that 6600 can be overclocked much higher?

Not much much higher, say 300 Mhz more, so for a 300 Mhz higher overclock and 2Mb of cache which makes a difference in applications not current games your going to pay upwards of £100. Its up to you if you want to spend that extra cash. Personally I was set for the E6600 for months then decided to save a bit of cash and get the E6300 and I must say I havent regretted it, as its sat here at 2.8 Ghz on stock volts with much more headroom to overclock.

Same here....had an E6600....now got an E6300...for the very small performance gain...it's just not worth twice the price.

My E6300 runs rock solid @ 3.4ghz @ 1.44v very very happy. :D

What temps are you getting at that voltage and what cooler are you using?

/EDIT

Just seen in your sig that its H2O. Im well spaced out today

cant be bothered to wait, ive already waited 6 months :)

and ill be doing just about everything, internet surfing, gaming, movie watching etc.

i'm thinking of getting a E6400 atm, its not that much more than a E6300 and it should overclock better no?

If you get some decent RAM and a board that can do really high FSB anyway then you will probably reach the CPU's limit before the motherboard's. In which case there would be no difference. To be honest unless I was on a really tight budget I'd get the 6400 anwyway. :)

Well the extra cache does help performance slightly and on average the E6600 can overclock quite allot more.

Of course allot of E6300/6400 users do get lucky and get nice overclocks but you have to go by the average not the few lucky users who get killer overclocking CPU's. If you expect the same as them you will more then likely be very disapointed. :p

I had the E6300 first but then sold it for the E6600. If you are not going to overclock then it is worth the money. And if you are going to overclock it should be a little easier, or so I gather.

Ill probs get a 6600 at some point, i sort of hit what i can get out of my 6300 seems to be 3 gig, would like to hit 3.4+ plus the extra cache will help with video encoding.

if you're going under water and want as close to 4ghz as possible the 6600 is worth the extra money imo, on avg they will clock a few hundred mhz more with less volts than a 6300.

my week 27B 6600 hits 15hrs orthos stable @ 3650 1.36v bios with an XP120 on a 680i board with .05v droop.

under water it should be good for 3.8-3.9 stable once i give it some voltage, you won't find many 6300's coming close to this.

A 6600 is more flexible (multipliers) and a little more efficient at tasks (unobstructed 4MB cache)

Other than that, a good clocking 6300 will do just fine.

And 6300 normally pairs with a P965 chipset which is incredibly overclockable (budget setups), whilst 6600 upwards should go with 975x or 680i Mobos now, to utilise the better power regulation.

So the former gains performance through overclocking Ram and FSB, while the latter does it with staying at lower clock and using higher multiplier. That's why you normally see E6300 running at 450-500Mhz (x7) on a P965 and a 6600 at 400x9

Hope that helps, and no, it's not worth 2 folds over a 6300 :D
