Is EVE possible without giving away all your time?

You don't need more than one account. People choose to have more than one to make their life easier for some things. It is far from a necessity for many things. I have extra accounts to help other people I don't actually need them to help myself. It depends how you play and what your goals are. But with one account you could:

Within 3 months of training you can be running pretty much every high-end DED site solo. That's a good billion to me in an evening's sitting. This is my main ISK earner and I do it with one character 95% of the time.

Within a few weeks you could be mining gas in null making a quarter of that at little to no risk. Great money for new characters as one hour would pay for two of the below.

Within 6 weeks you could be in a brilliant PVP ship flying it at 95% efficiency and a boon to any fleet.

If you choose or want to buy capital ships and not rely on your friends then it is better to have a second account. If you want to maximise profits then you can have a trade character on the same account. If you need a simple scout you can use repeated trial accounts.

I am not disputing how people in this thread are playing the game and what they have found for their own personal playstyle. What I am saying is that it is far from necessary and I play in the same conditions as the OP working around the time I get with my kids. Just offering an alternative voice and perspective. If you play with other people then one account hardly hinders you if you work together - it is a MMO afterall - peoples' desires to play a multiplayer game in a solo fashion is where the desire for extra accounts comes in.

There aren't many MMOs that work if you are time-short, I wouldn't get involved in another one, not at the moment anyway. When I did play Eve back in the day it took up a lot of time. It wasn't so much the time as it tended to be scheduled, long blocks of time which are a pain in the butt.

Slightly OT, but playing Destiny has totally scratched my itch for an MMO without the time commitment. It's designed so even end game content can be completed in a 1 hour sitting. There's no 'down time' grinding mining or anything, you just jump in and within a couple of minutes you're getting into the guts of the gameplay. I only get maybe a definite 2 hour slot a week game time and that's enough to do the end game stuff. The rest of the time I can just pick the controller when I have a spare moment and enjoy the game, then drop it again 15 mins later without penalty.

My 2 cents.

sure if you find someone to cover the shifts you can't manage.

biggest problem with eve is multiple accounts.

CCP should lock that down as it makes it so you really need to be doing the same as everyone else with their throw away scouts so they never get ganked etc
but ofcourse ccp wouldn't remove multi boxing because they make so much money from people with cyno alts and stuff they barely ever use but maintain a subscription for

I bet more than half the active accounts are second and third accounts

With Eve (and other games like it) and kids, it's not about the length of time you can play (as others said, kids sleep). It's more about can you stop playing at the drop of a hat and go deal with a child crisis (which at certain ages is everything). You can't pause Eve and in most cases can't just drop what you are doing (although some you can). This means you either need a very understanding other half who will accept you saying for the next couple of hours you can't help or you need to do things in Eve that allow you to go afk with no notice. This limits what you can do.
When my kids were younger I tried to play Eve and other MMO's and found I was letting friends down too much. They were very understanding (having been through it), but for a while I just stuck to single player games with a pause button.
As the kids get older, start playing games with them. Some of my best gaming experiences have been co-op Portal 2 and Orcs must die 2, plus the obvious Minecraft sessions with them. I think every kid is born with the urge to play minecraft now!

They can't really prevent people using multiple accounts on a technical level.

I wouldn't even have bothered with the game without multiple accounts - playing in w-space its way too tedious bringing a character in and out all the time when you want to do something in k-space i.e. do a bit of PVE with friends outside corp - same with capital ship logistics - way too tedious waiting on someone else to deliver and so on.

In answer to the OP; don't do it. It starts off great, but it turns into a second job that you have to pay for. It can be amazing at times, but its a very slow burning game that takes allot of time to get the best out of.
