A very broad question i know.

Fastest - By this i mean 0-60 times, pit times, top speed etc.

I am watching CSI Miami and they are showing an episode about a form of 'F1 style' racing and talking about $250k engines and i was just wondering how F1 compares?

250k would be pocket money compared to the engine costs in F1

deffo one of if not the fastest form of motorsport(although i believe indycar is not a million miles off and some of the nascar speeds were silly before they started fitting the restrictor plates but in terms of cost yup F1> everyrthing

DTM beats F1 for pit stop time
Drag racing beats F1 for acceleration
Le Mans Prototypes beat F1 for top speed

I think F1 is pretty much untouchable in terms of cornering speeds though

for pure acceleration it has to be top fuel, for circuits then F1 is very much in the lead id say.

Im not an expert but due to lack of traction you could probably spend £15k on the engine of an old r32 gtr and beat an F1 car on the 1/4

ok i take that back

in terms of cost F1 is bleeding ludicrous compared to anythign else

i cite this source but surely it cant be right

£4million for an engine down from £16 million wtf?

Thats for the seasons worth of engines.

8 race engines plus testing and demo units. Maybe 15 at the most.

Certainly better than BMW's first year when it returned to F1 in '99, 300 engines were supplied iirc. *that number does include rebuilds of the original 50 engines though*

Air Racing is probably the fastest motor sport. Probably the most dangerous too, multiple planes meters apart from each other, racing around an air track. Bet the adrenaline rush is awesome :p

aside from the already mentioned red bull air races where you can get cornering forces of over 12g nothing wheel driven comes close to that kind of cornering.

however, i'm pretty sure top fuel dragsters will easily out do an F1 car in top speed even on their tiny 400m drag strip. not sure how fast le mans cars go, but the fastest car to meet the FIA's F1 spec managed 247mph. it was a honda so it was probably around 2004

Have you seen that Honda though? It was a project they built and ran on the salt flats in America. It has an aero setup that would be un-usable on track (no rear wing, tiny front wing, etc). A Le Mans car in race trim has a higher top speed than an F1 car due to reduced drag from much lower downforce and covered wheels.

I know a top fuel dragster will also beat an F1 car at top speed, but I was going for 1 critera per car.

I thought Indycars were much faster than F1?

On some of the ovals, they average over 200mph.

If you put a F1 car and an indycar around the same road course, the difference in speed would be massive. I believe even GP2 cars are quicker.

If you set up an F1 car properly for an oval it would be no doubt faster than the indycar too.

For any given stat, no, F1 is probably not the fastest (wheeled) motorsport. However, on any given F1 track, F1 cars are almost certainly complete a lap considerably faster than any other formula. F1 cars are incredible at cornering, and it's the speed they can carry through the twisties that makes them the best.

I never knew this, but then again I don't follow DTM.

Amazing though - I gather this is down to the tyres being smaller and lighter thus easier to change quickly ?

I think they have the pneumatic jacks built into the car as they do in WTCC/BTCC? So the car just stops and raises itself.
