Is firefox Safe?

FF is also far better at rendering web pages according to the "Acid 2 test"

I have two problems with that statement. Firstly, the current version of Firefox doesn't pass the acid2 test. Whether it does it "better" is completely arbitary and seems to be your opinion. The test was designed to be a pass / fail test, not something that can be scored, and as such I don't see how Firefox (current version) is any better than IE 7. In particular, the most obvious difference between the two pictures you show is the red / white background, which is a fairly minor thing at the end of the day.

Secondly, you assert that its performance in that test makes it "far better at rendering web pages". It makes the pre-release version of Firefox better at meeting standards and better at passing a very contrived test, but in terms of real world pages I think this is entirely irrelevant. Both IE7 and Firefox display most pages well. The only time I've ever had an issue with either browser is either when developers have been incredibly lazy or used outdated tools, or where someone has foolishy set their server to check the user agent string and refuse to serve a particular browser. Some firefox enthusiasts are terrible for this - seeing a page in IE7 that tells me how much better I'd be doing if I were using Firefox is very irritating and, I would have thought, against the whole spirit of making a better browser.

Yeh ok mate

Every time I give an opinion or try to say why I rekon X is better than X I get some twit jump down my throat because they disagree. Whenever I give some "evidence" to back up what I say it doesn't help the situation at all.

 Wonder why I bother, getting pretty fed up with it tbh.

best bit I like is that you can select all cookies to be deleted when you close firefox with the exception of ones you want to keep such as log-ins etc which you have previously selected & typed in ' exceptions'
This rids your system instantly of tracking cookies & other malware.
Since I did this my spyware cleaner never comes up with anything ;)

Calm down dear, it's only a discussion forum!

I wouldn't say its anymore secure then IE, packet interception is unlikely if you have 128 or 256 bit encryption.

Define "secure".

Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Windows shell. Any website that can inject malicious code into IE can potentially compromise Windows.

Even if a website compromises Firefox, the problems stop there. You can uninstall it and put it back. Windows is still secure.

Just my 2 pence...

how do you cut and paste them into the the exceptions box ?

There are a few cookies that I want to keep that are in 'show cookies' not sure how I get them into 'exceptions'

When you have for example a forum loaded , cut the entire address from the top bar & paste it in, that seems to work o.k.

if I have the 'accept cookies from sites' unticked. Hotmail for instance would work with having cookies enabled

edit, have ticked it now.

Should look like this:
http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/reference.html

IE7 shows it like this:
http://files.myopera.com/tarquinwj/albums/45511/2IE7.png

Whereas FF shows it like this:
http://files.myopera.com/tarquinwj/albums/45511/1FF15.png

And the FF 3 alpha aka "deer park" shows it like this:
http://files.myopera.com/tarquinwj/albums/45511/1FF3.png

Try the test yourself here

I find it amusingly ironic they're linked at opera :D :p

If you want to compared acid tests and get a browser based on that and rendering opera is youre only choice. The first cross OS browser to pass :) A great rendering engine. Opera 9.2 has some wonderful features you can go wrong with and with 10 on the cards it looks like its only going to get better!

Konqueror passes it too, and Opera has some rendering abnormalities once you stray away from contrived tests.
Can we avoid the Opera pimping in every Firefox thread?

Flock is actually a browser I am really liking at the moment, based on the Firefox 1.5 engine. Seems to handle things much better than Firefox 2.x :)

It looks pretty... Is it more lightweight?

FF and IE are both fine web browsers, it is really a matter of personal preference. However if you are running a older computer, the last browser I would recommend if FF, IE is not very good in this department either.

I used FF to post this message, was using IE to login to University, and Epiphany to watch videos on YouTube. Everything has its place. Would love to know of a lightweight web browser that has all the features that also conforms to all the standards.
