I read loads of threads about people saying its the "best time of your life" and a party all the way etc and its gonna secure a high paying job at the end of it but will it in the majority of students ?

I can understand why doctors, dentists, surgeon, engineer etc that kind specialist job requires degrees but if your not aiming that high ie being a brain surgeon etc, are degrees worth the debt and time ? are they not just a status thing like "ohh i have a degree on my cv im gonna standout from the rest of the flock" etc ?

Can you be successful ie have a higher than average salary without having spent years and a lot of money getting degrees ?

It depends on the individual. That all we can defiantly say.

Non of us can accurately predict the future, when you graduate you could be in great demand(Earn loads), or no one wants you =(

It should be degree that:
A: Interests you personally. This is how academics are born.
B: Something you think people are willing to pay a premium for.

Every investment involves risk and speculation, this includes education.

Majority of students = Doing pointless degrees and drinking themselves to death, just saying..
It's not really worth it if you are doing a pointless degree, you could save the debt and still have just as much fun.

If you want to do a real degree then by all means go to university, by real degree I mean similar to those stated in your OP.
BS degrees like art, english literature and the likes is going to get you a lot of fun, but at the end of it you'll be working in ASDA like a lot of daft students who cant get a job because they did a BS degree.

To the contrary, being a student really is the best time of your life, but don't go to university because it sounds like fun. You go to get the qualifications, so go where your interests take you.

I start the third year of my Software Engineering degree on Monday and so far University has been okay. Nothing amazing and certainly not the best time of my life.

Here comes the stereotype brush...

I am about to go into my 6th year at the same University.
Even at a good University, the average student is a drunken, lazy, inconsiderate waster.
Even in Engineering you do a moderate effort and get a 2.2, a bit less if you are clever. I have seen it done, many times over. Getting a 2.1 or a 1st though can be a killer.

I can whole heartedly say, getting a 1st class in Engineering is lots of things - Stressful, time consuming and at times life swalling. What it isn't is partying, sleeping and gaming 24/7. but then Engineers don't have issues finding work - There is a reason for this.

Do a course that has real world jobs at the end. Don't go to a crap University.

Fed up of the thousands of people doing stupid degrees just because labour wanted 50% of students to go to uni to manipulate the unemployment figures.

Should cut half the degrees and go back to when a levels were worth something imo. See so many students who took degrees just because they felt they had to and know full well they are just going into debt. I do a maths degree and chose it because I knew it would get me a decent job to pay my debts. Out of my friends not doing a maths degree, only maybe 3 of them are doing something worth having. Might not even be 3 actually.

If it wasn't for all these people clogging up the system the government wouldn't be needing people to pay 9k fees because there would be more money to go around per student.

That's how it was for me, I didn't even go to a great university. You just contradicted yourself in one post. One hand you called them wasters, on the other hand you called it difficult, stressful and time consuming.

Everybody's a waster, but you?

Uni is also a lot of hard work. Don't think the 20 hours of timetabled lectures is many courses is all that is required. I would often spend 80 hours a week studing or doing coursework, working on projects.

For me, uni was a lot of hard work, often rewarding but often not, sometimes boring, often exciting, sometimes a lot of fun and a great reaxed atmosphere, sometimes serious grind and a lot of stress.

A good degree from a good uni is invlauble, and incredibly cheap in the UK. I work with people who ammounted 250-350,000USD in debt doing bachelors .

No qualification is an absolute guarantee of a high paying job at the end of it, alas. It boils down ultimately to knowing who you are, what you can do and who you know. :) It also helps not to be completely risk averse, as you won't get anywhere without 'having spent years and a lot of money' by virtue of living in a modern and rather turbulent capitalist society. But if money is the only thing you are after, there are career routes which still pay well without heavy academic study - sales being the cliche example.

Also, don't ignore the work and study route. It is not for everyone, but can work out the best of both worlds for particularly independent and driven souls.

It depends on a few things.

What degree, what uni and what grade you get.
What you want to do afterwards.

For me personally it was pretty much a waste of time(other than a amazing life experience) and I could be much higher up and earning more if I didn't go.

But that the degree is useless I've applied for a few jobs where you have to have a degree to apply, so in that regard it's given my opportunities that I've failed to gain.

On the other hand get a 1st of a top uni in maths and the chances are you'll be head hunted and will be rich.

Hmm could that post be anymore confusing.
Should also point out that the reason uni was pretty useless for me is I did totally the wrong degree.

I agree. The amount of debt some Americans seem to have is absolutely incredible. I am very fortunate as I will have no debt when I finish my degree due to SAAS.

Most students are wasters. How did I contradict myself?
I have been at a top Uni now for a fair while and even at the best place in the UK for Sports Science, they still have absolutely no idea what hard work is.

Going to a crap University just means you beat everyone else who isn't very clever. Kind of like winning the special needs 100m run.
