I had a quick search but couldn't find another topic on this (although I may be wrong).

Been thinking for a while now and was just wondering what other people thought about Google and the way they are, effectively, integrating more and more into a person's "online life" -

Chrome Browser
Google Buzz
Google Latitude
G-Mail
Google Books
Picasa
iGoogle
Google Checkout

This is to name just a few products or services provided by Google.

Now, granted, no one forces you to use them but (and I don my tinfoil hat for this) is there a legitimate concern that, should you use these products, Google will know everything about your online and parts of your offline life ??

There has been the reports that Google already harvests information about you so that it can direct appropriate ads etc to you but what other ways can this data be used ??

Will it get to a point where they have so much info that other organisations and agencies (private and government) will look to use it ??

As said - tinfoil hat time but humour me :)

Thoughts ??

its only the same as Tesco's they have your details shopping details phones insurance etc..

Tesco is not as big but it is the same sort of thing

YouTube.

As for your question, I'm not sure really. If it got to a point where they were able to get a lot of information about its users, then someone would probably step in and review it, like recently with the saved information from searches iirc.

Possibly...

Basically they can know -
What sites you visit
Emails you send/receive
Items you buy
Books you read
Pictures you have taken
Where you are by using your mobile
Who your friends and family are
etc etc

meh...

Plus they're large enough to buy any company which may have useful information on you. So yes, I'd say there's a risk in using all these services. Only one of those I use is iGoogle, just because I don't need the others.

Too big for what? *shrug*

So can plenty of other online service/games providers etc.

Google provide a load of great services for free. I'll happily enjoy google street view, google search, youtube, gmail, shareable calendars, etcetc, without paying a penny. Go google!

Most probably, but people excuse them for a whole variety of reasons, just as they excuse Apple for their anticompetitive behaviour in the digital music market.

BTW, just so its out there, I dont have anything against Google and use some of their services. I am not having a go at them, just putting this thought out there to see what others feel or get others opinions... Devil's Advocate if you will

in the world we live in today anything and everything you do can be tracked by various different companys/organizations. its worrying if youve got something to worry about but for everyone else then who cares. everyone's in the same boat

When i get all googles services for free they can read my emails from shopping websites and spam to be honest :D

Got something to hide?

Nope, but do you? Can I see you naked please? I'd like to see where you live and what your house looks like. I'd like to see your partner too, what's her name? What do you eat for dinner? Where do you go shopping? How long does it take you to make a twosies? How big/small is your penis? What are you political stances? If there was a revolution, would you be a part of it? What colour is your underwear?

Why do you have to have something to hide to care about privacy?? Something I've never understood.
