Is Half life 2 any good?

Is Cinematic Mod heavy on the system, or rather how well optimised is it? I've an i5 760, 4GB DDR3, and a GTX 260... could I max it out at 1680x1050 with a minimum of 40 fps with that?

I would say the first Half Life is the best FPS of all time but HL2 was just merely 'good'. Probably an 8/10 game no higher. It was massively over-rated by the gaming press, all of them declaring it the best game ever with silly scores like 97/98%.

Half Life was a fine game no doubt. Maybe the best FPS ever created, I know I enjoyed it, but I enjoyed Half Life 2 more for some reason. I just liked the whole story in Half Life 2, not that Half Life had a poor story as it didn't. It was fantastic, and without it Half Life 2 would have made no sense really.

Both are excellent games...

Oh and the comment about being spoilt. I think younger gamers tend to see games released in the last few years and they see huge explosions and graphics that pop out. Half Life would look poor. I mean, I look at doom and think its poor now, but I do remember that being the benchmark. Yet I still think doom 3 looks fantastic, but new younger gamers would think that looks poor and COD4 MW is the benchmark.. I just think as older gamers get older we remember the true classics and younger gamers see them as poor or less quality games due the dated looks..

Bit of a shame, but just the way it is..

dunno. I run the spec in my sig and have the game running at 1920 x 1080 8 x AA max details with cinemod 10.90, but I've not monitored the fps. To be honest, I don't look. I only take a look when I think the game is running really sluggish.

I'm not one for saying - ooh its not running 60fps, or its only running at 30fps so its rubbish. I go on how it feels and if the controls lag, then I take a look to see what I can do to up the fps...

Cinemod 10.90 does require a lot of VRAM - 1GB recommended.

Probably because, as I remember, it WAS the best PC FPS at the time, or at least the most complete package. You have to remember scores are in context of what else is out there at the time, not whats come since or in hindsight.

Am half tempted to download the latest CM and play through HL2 +EP1/2 again now after this thread.

As mentioned it does like 1gb of vram but other than that your rig is perfect for it. You should be able to reach high settings at the least. Worth a download, don't ya think? ;)

Yeah, I hear ya. Not too picky with fps myself. As long as it stays over 20 I can deal with it, but would prefer 40-ish as that seems to be the sweet spot for me personally.

The 896mb of VRAM I've got has been a bit stretched lately, but yeah it should be well playable. Then again, I've been meaning to upgrade my card for some time now, and hopefully Black Mesa will be released finally so I can have a full go through the entire series that way. Hmmm, I'll see...

P.S. Those changed character models (particularly Alyx) look absolutely horrendous to me  Will definitely be keeping the original ones!

Thats a picture from CM with one of the alternate Alyx skins, as well as the texture/sound/level maps overhaul, there are also new character models you can chose whether to use or not.
Alyx has the most love and has about 5-10 different models available, dependant on CM version you're on.

I envy the OP for never having played the game. I'd love to be able to experience it for the first time again. I'm holding off on my next play-through until Black Mesa is released which should (eventually) be awesome.

For all it's impressiveness however, I hate the cinimatic mod and personally wish it didn't exist. I would urge the OP to at least play through the series once without it if they do insist on getting it.

they aren't they're making ep 3 it'll be out sometime...

I believe Valve have the release date set for 21/12/2012, the whole Mayan Calander predicting the end of the world thing is just a coincidence, really its the release of Episode 3.

In your opinion. I always thought Far Cry was the most impressive FPS of that era. Hl2 felt like a physics demo a lot of the time.
