2 out of 3 new iMacs at work have started getting this on their IPS screens and at times it is terrible.
Done a bit of reading and it does seem to be a known problem with IPS panels.

However how common is it on other makes and models of IPS screens?
I was not really aware of this until the iMac issues and my 24" LG IPS monitor has never noticeably had it.

Is there ever any danger the retention will become permanent or does it always reset/fade?

I guess by the lack of replies it's not that common then? :p

Here is a section from a photo showing how obvious it is though:

None of my IPS panels really have extensive useage as I only really use them for stuff where color is critical but none of them have or have had any image retention issues.

My Korean Qnix monitor has image retention. It uses the same Samsung PLS panel that apple uses as far as I know.

Apparently Samsung make the iPad screen and both Samsung and LG make the MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPod Touch displays.

Modern tfts are only supposed to suffer brown in, not burn in; it should be reversible using a program that alternates bright/dark overnight.

I found that turning the monitor off for 10 mins was all mine needed. Or a couple of rounds of BF3 :)

I've have a Dell and a Hazro both are heavily used, I had an Apple Cinema for nearly 10 years and I've never seen that problem.

Thanks for the replies.
At least it isn't just ours, even if it isn't that common.
Sounds then like it might just be some batches of panels.
Currently arranging to get them back to Apple anyway and see what they say.
They are barely a month old.
If it is just the type of usage then fair enough, but they may just replace anyway - fingers crossed.
