As my bad luck with my computer continues it seems my computer cannot find my hard drive, the problem is that it was the one with my OS on. Annoyingly it had a few things on it that i hadn't got round to backing up (as i normally back up every 2 weeks these files are only a week or so old). Obviously i cannot get into windows and in BIOS it's not detected no matter what sata port i use. My first guess is it is dead but i'm in hope it's not because surely my luck isn't that bad that my graphics, hard drive and car can break in the space of 2 weeks. Any suggestions on what i can do i shall i just concede defeat?

Thanks in advance for any comments

Boot to windows on different drive/Windows disk with hdd plugged in, see if it appears in Disk Management / install windows-->choose disk screen, if it does either of those, you should be able to get data off. Also try USB enclosure if not recognised in BIOS.

EDIT: noticed not recognised in BIOS, so just do the above with HDD plugged into USB enclosure instead of SATA port.

haven't got a usb enclosure, and i should have added earlier it's a seagate 7200.11, so im pretty sure it's screwed as i'm out of warranty on it :( pulled it out and re-installed on my WD caviar black now. Hopefully this shouldn't die on me it's only a month or 2 old.

Out of warranty? Thought they came with 5 years, until that recent fiasco anyway. How old is the thing? Always worth trying Seagate or i365 anyway, they might run a serial number check or something and decide it's good for RMA.

7200.11s are fairly recent - so it shouldn't be out of warranty.

I really really don't know why the whole 7200.11 line isn't pulled - they obviously aren't upto any good and just giving seagate a bad name.

If you mean recall sold drives? - logistical nightmare, far too expensive, much more bad press.
If you mean stop selling them - they haven't got the 7200.12s up and running yet properly, and they need something to replace the 7200.11s at all capacities/price points. Still no 1.5tb 7200.12s, and I doubt they'll be as cheap as the current 7200.11s at that capacity (another of which I just availed myself of :p) so don't pull the line! It's my intended source of backup HDDs for some time :D.

Recall drives - no.

Pulling the remaining stocks yes - the bad PR is gonna be costing them dear - if they really think they are fixed, they should re-designate them - which forces them to stake their reputation on it.

I'd never use a 7200.11 for backup, even as a throw away.

ahhhhh but i didn't buy this as a seperate, this was one of the things i salvaged from an old rubbish dell rig which i bought to find was mediocore at best (forgive me i've only got interested in this scene in the past few months i now know not to buy a dell) so in theory i should go back to dell which i can't do.
