Is it expensive to use my phone in LA?

I have a Blackberry bold 9700 on contract with Orange. It's £40 a month but it's pretty much free to what ever I like for as long as I like. Now I'm going Los Angeles in November and wondered will it cost me extra to use it over there?
 
I wonder if picking a sim card up while I'm over there will be a good idea. That is if I can use other sims on my phone and pay as I go on one of their networks.
 
It's ridiculously expensive, over a quid a minute.

Unless you are going for a month or more just get a prepaid calling card and use the hotel phone.
 
Depends if the phone is unlocked...if it is then yes just pick up a PAYG card whilst you are there...just make sure its a GSM network ie AT&T as America has CDMA networks which do not use sim cards.

Also make sure your data roaming is switched off as it will automatically start romaing soon as your out of the airport.
