I went to 32GB a few years ago after upgrading from a 2600k to a 3900x. 32GB is definitely the new standard for any mid to high end gaming rigs.
Is it finally time to upgrade from 16GB?

Mainstream games, none that I'm aware of, but modded games certainly can. Though, I think it is more useful for the flexibility of not having to close stuff when you're gaming, than for gaming alone.

Wrong, first cities Skylines with a few mods I hit 36GB with a medium sized city.
Admittedly that is a bit of an outlier, and generally you are right.
I upgraded a couple of weeks ago, and have hit 18-20gb a couple of times, so it's not over by much, but 32gb should future proof for a couple of years at least now

Probs about time i upgraded to 32gb then!
I've been running 32GB for nearly two years now and it was only Jedi Survivor and other programs running that went into the 20GB of usage recently, but I don't play that many demanding games. 32GB is certainly worth considering if you have the budget and if buying new I'd certainly recommend it.

I regularly hit 20-25GB when gaming on 32GB with browser + other background stuff running, so I'd say yeah
