Is it illegal...

I thought it was, along with knowingly running out of fuel etc.

No, loads of cars have runflat tyres now and no spare wheel. The E39 M5 has non-runflat tyres and no spare wheel as the exhaust goes where the spare wheel well would normally be.

Nope, you'll find a lot of mk1 MX5 owners ditch the spare wheel for a can of tyre foam to free up some boot space.

Germany is quite strict on rules like that, needing things like first aid kit, spare bulb kit, even a blanket etc...

if you carry one though, it has to be a legal thread depth

It's not inspected on the MOT. Only if the wheel's on the car during the MOT or you get pulled over.

And no, you don't need one, just to echo the 268 other comments ;) I carry a can of tyreweld instead in the MX5, saves a good bit of weight [edit: Great minds ^ ]

Hmmm, interesting. I assume you must have either or, the tyre foam or the spare wheel?

No? It's a bit like running out of petrol. Perhaps a little silly and irresponsible, but in the eyes of the law you don't need to carry RFTs, tyre foam or a spare :p

I'm sure from my days of a boot filled with audio equipment that you needed an accessible spare for the MOT so I assume this would count for the tyre weld. Whether the MOT tester gives a crap is another story no doubt.

The only reason my MOT inspector moaned about the sub in my boot impeding access was to check for corrosion. The spare wheel is not part of the MOT test.
