Is it me or is my psu a dud

Hi bought a corsair 620w hx psu on saturday and have been building a new system, made sure i was earthed during the build . i have watercooled case so i have connected my watercooling system and was trying to run the psu with only fans and pump to circulate the cooling liquid. There was no sign of power in the psu when switched on have i done something wrong

How are you switching the PSU on? It wont just work if its only connected to the water cooling system. Connect to the mainboard too, then power it up via the case switch.

didnt want to fry the psu with no coolant in the system.knew it had something to do with me being thick

If you want to run the PSU without running the motherboard you will need to short pins 13 & 14 on the 24pin ATX connector, you can use a paper clip or piece of wire.

No probs, I remember from installing my Swiftech kit last year & checking my PSU last year when it blew-up.

Yes you could do that, though I'm not a big fan of inserting paperclips or bits of metal into PSUs.
The best way to do it, if you don't want to actually connect it to the rig is to use a PSU tester.
