IS it normal for stuter/judder when dropping from 100fps to even 97fps

As the title states, I've noticed this happens on pretty much every game i have. I have a 144hz g-sync monitor which i cap to 100fps on Rivatuner, and most games i play only use 40-50% of my GPU (GTX 1080) but i still get framedrop from say 100 to 97 (or pretty much any other drop small or large) which causes a judder/stutter for a split second which is rather annoying. I'm wondering if this is normal or should it still be butter smooth with such a tiny drop in frames?

Even if i limit my fps to 60 even though i never touch 60 when i'm capped at 100 i still dip below 60fps and GPU usage is really low.

If its not normal, ideas on a better fix suggestions would be brilliant.

My specs are:
  • i7 6700
  • 16GB RAM
  • GTX 1080
  • Corsair CX 750M PSU

whats youre cpu usage? I would have thought the gpu usage shpuld have stayed pretty high.

what games are you playing?

CPU Usage is around 40% and GPU usage is around the same, sometimes lower.

Tried H1Z1 Just Survive, Player Unknown Battlegrounds (I get very high drops on this game, with low GPU usage)

I also tried unigine/3dmark which both utilise 99% of the GPU.

GPU and CPU temps are around 40-60 under load on CPU and around 50-70 on GPU.

Ive not tried any of they games but with your system I don't understand why your getting any stuttering.
the games I play I see the GPU usage at 99% most of the time.

do you have the RAM xmp profile set? Im wondering if this could be a problem. ( long shot )
the temps are good so its not a thermal issue.

I see both games are MMO could this be the issue? again Ive never played them.. whats your internet speeds?

EDIT what OS are you running?

So I'm running 1607 because i've read a huge thread on nvidia where a lot have had problems on 1703, i hoped this would resolve it like it has others over there, but sadly it hasn't.

I have XMP profile but right now i have BIOS at factory, I've played with XMP but have no real changes.

I know others who play the same games and they have no stuttering on less hardware.

you will get a judder as that card cant maintain the fps you are capping it to at 144hz.stop capping it.player unknowns you will get dips to 70/80s.even on some low settings at 1080

Are you using Gsync? The engine for the games you listed is a known stutterer. Try a different developer's games.
Don't cap @ 100, your 1080 can do waaay more than that at ultra in so many games. If anything cap at whatever Hz your monitor falls out of Gsync (For my dell SD2716 that's 140Hz, so I cap there). Gsync on, Vsync off.

If this were happening in ALL games I'd take a look at possibly having a fault somewhere else in the system, like a screwy drive.

Try changing power management from optimal to adaptive or maximum performance in the nVidia control panel. (I wouldn't leave it on maximum performance unless you need to as this will run full clocks all the time).

Hi. A little update.

I seem to have tracked down the cause for the stutter, but have yet to find a fix. I was playing Battlefield 1 and FIFA 17 and in the following graph my frametimes sometimes hit 139,000 ms (what causes this?)

Now whilst playing these games none of the CPU Cores go anywhere near 80% let alone 100%. I'm capped in Rivatuner at 100fps and have vsync on but have also tried it off, this leads me to believe should i be able to get consistent frame times i'd be able to get rid of the stutter, but the question is how would i achieve a stable frametime? Instead of it occasionally hitting 130,000+ ms.

I have a 6700K and GTX 1080 which should easily be able to obtain 100fps in most games out today at 1080p, and even 1440p.

Look forward to hearing your replies!
