Is it ok to go without a sub?

Something I find with a subwoofer if you don't live in a detached house is worrying every time there is an explosion or similar. It can be a great experience for the viewer and a massive annoyance to anyone else. I sold my sub and to be honest are more than happy with what my two floorstanders produce. I don't think I will get another until I'm without physical connections to my neighbours :p

I would just like to ask in this topic a question.

I currently have x2 floor standing and a centre. Monitor Audio speakers.

I am and have thought about a Sub. BUT I am concerned that it could annoy the neighbour's attached to my house.

I have a 3 bed new(ish) semi detached house.

Lounge backs onto there lounge. Do the sub's pass a lot of frequency sound/feel. That would bother me.

depends on how your house is built. I've seen threads where people have managed to annoy neighbours in detached houses while using a small sub.

I would say get a cheap (but very good for the price) Q Acoustics sub and check it out. It's not a lot of money and if you're friendly with your neighbours, ask them to let you know when they feel any unwanted noise/vibrations from the sub.

I'd have thought if it was a newly built house then the chances are the walls will be quite thin and it will probably annoy them.

I remember we rented one of those 3 floor townhouses they tend to like building on new estates these days and you could head a lot through the walls.

Don't most speakers go down to about 50hz though?

Most subs only seem to manage a bit more to around 30hz, does that 20hz really make much difference? i don't want anything too loud either when just watching tv, might be good for the odd film though im sure...

Yes it's a massive difference.. Most speakers go down to 50hz, on their little 6" cones. And that's if it's a decent floorstander.

I've just bought a new HSU sub, cos my old REL was having issues, and I can tell you, I have a big grin back on my face !! So yes, it's important.

. BUT I am concerned that it could annoy the neighbour's attached to my house.

Yes, that is the downside to a decent setup. You'll want to crank it to appreciate it, but if you have neighbours, then it's gonna annoy them.

If you can sell up and move to a detached home.. It'll be worth it.. :p

Also depending on what frequency, different things rattle.

Using a test tone disc, (and these are just examples at what's vibrating at what freq but you should get my point), at 16hz, my patio windows shake, at 20hz, my aluminum wall studs (inside the wall) start to fap, at 25hz, my kitchen cabinets start to vibrate, at 30hz, my blinds and glass shelving on a unit starts to vibrate.

But this is using a constant test tone.. During movies and music, with things tamed down and low low bass, no longer than a few secs, you really do not notice any vibration.

To be honest mate, if you're anything like me (or any other considerate neighbour) the worry of them hearing it is often enough for you to tone it down so the point of insignificance. Sub woofers are for people with detached houses or cinema rooms at the opposite end of the building - They're just too good at ******* everyone else off unfortunately. Unless of course you're fortunate to live somewhere like my old flat, which was just un-natural in it's sound deadening qualities. I popped next door to say hello and the person inside couldn't answer the door their music was so loud, couldn't hear a single peep in my flat! Alas I've found it to be the exception rather than the rule, so just be wary.

Someone will probably quote this, opening with "what a load of tosh", unaware they're the exact neighbour who thinks no-one else can hear their marvellous BK XXLS400 whilst next door sits there very unhappy and unwilling to come round and ask them to turn it down. :p

i have the tannoy sfx sub its not an expensive one but it really does make a difference in sound to thr normal speakers on there own even at lower volumes and lower bass levels everything sounds so much better but in a subtle way i live in a terraced house
and my neighbours dont hear or feel anything until i crank it up anyway and i keep it down after nine anyway apart from weekends

yeah cheers guys. This is why I have not purchased one. I do not have my music on loud, not the tv. I am not a'need it loud' type of person.

Mind you, my monitor audio speakers sound very good anyhow. Just was curious about bringing a Sub to the party.

I shall leave it as it is.
