I have a usb thumbstick, I got it at a computer show and it's got content on it. It was part of a company showcase. I was thinking as I don't have a thumbstick of my own until I got this company showcase one, is it possible to erase the content, format it and use it myself to put my own files on it?

okay what is CMD?

I have right click properties on my thumbstick and it said free space 120MB, used space 360MB it doesn't show total space but I guess it's 512MB and with those figures combined it's 480MB after formatted, is that right?

Is there a way I can take my acrobat professional 7.0 and put it on a usb thumbstick?

Hey Guys,

I have taken a look at my version of adobe acrobat 7.0 professional on my hard disk it's folder size is 470MB. Is there a way I can just copy and paste that file onto my usb thumbstick? So it then I can load up adobe acrobat on another computer directly from the usb thumbdrive without needing to install adobe on this other computer?

Also before I do any on this, Can I get this folder size much smaller? All I need from adobe 7.0 professional is the pdf editing features and reader.

sorry, I thought you were taking the micky. I thought if I followed those things I would end up messing my hard disc up. I wouldn't use CMD, I don't really like it. Is there a similar way to do it in windows?

this is totally sweet

I just went to my computer and right clicked and pressed explore on the usb thumbstick drive and just deleted the files on the thumbstick and they deleted. The drive wasn't copy protected. Now I take it I been lucky and don't need to do any formatting right? It just works right away with nothing needing to be done?

okay even when I right click on usb thumbstick in my computer and click properties it says used space 32kb and free space 483MB. I still want to format it as I want it as clean as possible as I will be putting important data on it like my book among other things and I don't want it lost. Currently I see the file system as FAT. I then right clicked and pressed format. I now see three options in a drop down box NTFS, FAT 32, FAT. It's already highlighted on FAT in the drop down box. it shows the capaity at 483MB. Should I tick the box for quick format? There are two tick boxes which are not ticked but grayed out so I can't choose them which is 'enable compression' and 'create an MS-DOS startup disk'. So do I just click format or quick format for FAT file system or FAT 32 or NTFS?

will thge formatting work just as well in the usb 1.0 port? You see the plastic shell around my usb thumbstick is too big for my usb 2.0 ports. and I can't get it off. So will the usb 1.0 or i think it is 1.1 will that be fine for the format?

actually guys, you know you are absolutely huge help. I am really very appreciative of all the patience you have with me, thank you so much I am really very grateful. Thank you very much.

okay I just installed open office portable onto my usb stick and it took 17 minutes in a usb 1.1 port. From that timing can we determine the speed of my usb stick, is it 6x 8x 12x???

As it took 17 minutes do you know how long it would have taken in a usb 2.0 port?

My PC is over 5 years old. I just did a test. Now that I installed open office portable onto the usb stick taking 17 minutes, I also installed open office portable onto my PC first which took around 3 minutes. Then I copied the folder onto my usb stick and waited to see how much faster it would be to get onto the usb disk as it had already been extracted/unpacked on my PC. The progerss bar changed from 17 minutes to all sorts of numbers. But then as it was coming around the 14 minutes mark and showed a countdown in seconds. Then the usb disk ran out of space as I had not removed the first installation of the file. i didn't want to but just thought I had enough room. Well anyway even though I didn't get the whole folder onto the usb disk it still would have been around 15 minutes for the folder to of copied over to the disk. Now while I was doing this, I was browsing the net to pass the time. So that could have slowed down things as well my anti virus was enabled. I am using avira anti vir and usb 1.1. I noticed the progress bar did speed up once I stopped browsing the net. But that might not mean anything. When I did the first install straight onto the usb disk I had my anti virus still enabled resulting in the 17 minutes time it took. But anyway from this numbers can we determine the speed of my usb disk??? and how much faster would it of been in a usb 2.0 port? Also is it better to always extract or do the installs on your PC then transfer it to the usb disk? for instance is better to use bittorrent to download directly to the usb stick providing the disk is fast speed like 64x?

Many thanks in advance
