Hi Guys,

Is it possible to not open up your laptop to switch on the laptop, instead to setup a key on the keyboard that when pressed will power up the laptop?

TIA

So you want to avoid opening your laptop to switch it on with the On button by opening it up and switching it on with the keyboard instead? :/

That makes absolutely no sense.

And in answer to your question: No.

While I have no idea of the op's question of how, I recon it's possible, since it's also poss on desktop's, ive been doing it for a year or so now, saves me streching to the case, much easier to turn on pc with a click or keyboard button :D .

I think what he wants to do is have a remote button added to the laptop to turn it on while its shut. It's perfectly possible, you'd just need to open the laptop up and run a new switch from the original power button on 2 wires. Make a small opening for the wires to come out of the laptop and have the button as remote as you like. You might also need to bypass the laptop sensor that detects if the lid is shut as this can prevent it from turning on somtimes.

a docking station, you can turn a laptop on without opening the lid, but not from a keyboard. i use mine at a docking station and dont need to open the lid but i need to turn it on..

thanks for the replies,

So you guys are saying there is no way to switch the laptop on without opening the lid? I read somewhere that you could put the laptop into hibernate mode and in this mode you could leave the laptop always on for like a week or more, and then you press a key on say a wireless keyboard which will then make the laptop startup again, is this possible? And how would i do it?

I mean tell me guys, is this the only other way to do it?

I never heard of a laptop docking station

Control Panel -> Power Option -> Hibernate

Check the Enable Hibernate Option and click apply.

When you next try to shutdown you will have an extra option called Hibernate - select it. To wake up the laptop all you need to do is press the appropriate key on your keyboard.

Which would be the power button, correct? Not sure what the OP is trying to accomplish here....

Nope - if he has an external keyboard plugged into the laptop he doesn't need to open the laptop to press the power button. Most external keyboards will already have a sleep button.

Yes but in hibernate mode the machine will be turned OFF so assuming the external keyboard is USB there will be no USB power, unless WAKE on USB has been enabled in the BIOS and is supported...
