Yes watercooling had the biggest role to play but from experience repasting can make a difference of 5-10 degrees. Repasting the 6990Ms on my M18x resulted in load temps of 55 max vs mid 60s previously.

I have replaced the thermal paste on a few of my cards but in general it resulted in no tangible difference to the temperatures. The only time it might help is if your card is seriously overheating, and in that case you might be better to DSR if it is new.

What has made me think of this is one of the guys at work has just bought a brand new MSI GTX 670 and one of the first things he wants to do with it is replace the thermal paste for no other reason than it seems like a good idea.

To me it seems like a completly stupid thing to do, invalidate your warranty just to gain a few degrees. When the thing will still be well within spec anyway.
