is it safe to change the fan in a psu?

I have an antec psu, but the fan is quite loud. Can I swap the fan out with a quieter one? I imagine the airflow will be lower with the new fan so not sure if this will be safe or not?

I've done it before myself but you have to be careful when opening a PSU. They store quite a charge even once unplugged depending on the construction.

Just make sure that the fan you are putting in has the same CFM rating as the one you are taking out. You may also have to solder the fans power and control wires as some PSU's don't use a plug but solder them directly to the PCB.

be VERY careful, they can hold a residual charge for a long time, weeks and more!

will give you one hell of a shock, not quite enough to kill you if you have a strong heart!

i'd recommend buying a new one, or retro-fitting one to the outside of the case (works!!)

If your not qualified to do it dont do it.

By the sounds of your first post you dont know what your doing (no offense)

Dont bother just buy a new PSU

Why are people telling him be careful, be careful. They can be highly dangerous.

We are saying be careful because it is bloody dangerous. Just because there is a risk doesn't mean you shouldn't do something though.

Its not worth all the hassel he will go through when doing this job, why not just buy a new one, havent got the money, Then Wait.

As simple as that

I swapped the fan in my PSU and even played with the pots to get my voltages spot on while the whole thing was live and running!! :D

Its usually pretty easy to do but be extremely careful. Make sure you have all the tools you need to hand and try not to drop anything. Take your time and you'll be fine! :p

And did you know what you were doing? by the sounds of things you did.

If you have any sense you would recommend that he dosent fiddle with anything inside hes PSU.

Harbz BUY A NEW ONE. Or stick with that noise, either way DONT open your PSU .

WHAT are you crazy, your either lying or you wrote this before you died and got someone to post it for you.

Not crazy but also not chicken!! :p :D

lol its not about being a chicken lol

Its about using your common sence.

I do what is right thanks regardless what other people think.

What do you think you get extra browney points because you changed a fan in your PSU?

There is little difference to opening a PSU if its running or not. As others have said the charge is stored for long after you turn it off, not much difference to leaving it on.

I wouldn't have done it while running but then again I can't see any reason not to. If I had to open it while running to do something I would, I just have never needed to.

He may not not entirely what hes doing but ffs hes only changing a fan. It's not rocket science.

Which is exactly why i changed the fan. If i'd done what the majority of people in this thread wanted i'd still have a noisy PSU. Which brings me nicely onto my next point.....

I changed the fan not to gain the respect of my OCUK peers but to silence an otherwise top notch PSU and allow me to adjust the fan speed using a fan controller.

As I said, if you're careful, take your time and don't take any risks (other than opening the thing up in the first place :) ) then you'll be fine

lol are you on drugs?

Oh i wouldn't of done it while its running but i dont see why not too? WTF

And how much knowledge do you have of PSUs?

And im not saying it is rocket science

But their is a valid reason why it saids on PSU and why technical engineers will say dont open a PSU unless you are qualified.

Umm what could that reason be?

OK, its not a rocket its a highly dangerous peice of electrical equipment and we never should have opened them up without someone with an NVQ holding our hand......or perhaps not cos that might mean we both die.......best bet just don't mess with them....ok!

Happy?! :p

Not sure where this thread is going so i'm going to unsubscribe and walk away....

Since i know nothing of the specific PSU in question i can offer nothing more than the general advice i've given above.

Thank you and good night :D

oh.....one more thing.....

Out of interest Stickroad, are you an engineer?
