Is it safe to store your passwords?

In Firefox (and IE when I used that) I stored my passwords for everything; ebay, paypal, forums, email, competitors etc.

Is this actually safe? How is the sensitive information kept secure?

I'm not sure how safe it is in IE but in Mozilla you can make someone enter a password before the password actually gets auto filled.

I personally use eWallet to store passwords and also Mozilla.

I always remember my passwords and never use the "remember my password" option in IE.

A guy at work showed me an app he keeps on a usb flash drive. Just plug it into a PC and run the .exe. The app will reveal all stored passwords along with the website urls. Also saved passwords for MSN & Yahoo Messenger etc.

When he tried to show it to me it didn't have the effect he was looking for because like I said I don't store any passwords.

I don't know if FF would be safe from this little app though.

It's scary how easy it would be to steal someone's passwords if they were to leave their PC unattended.
