Is it silly to buy windows 7 now?

i agree linux is a fantastic o/s but for your average user, its not very useful, your average user would see a command prompt and go all hands to panic, which as u know is a large portion of getting some software/updates for things, i havnt personally used linux for a few years, but definately see what you are saying

I was an average user ie started on DOS 6.22 so you can imagine my learning curve rearranging memory, autoexec.bat files etc...
Nowadays they have it way too easy but still find it hard, even linux is a lot easier now then the old days, says it all really about level of the average user in modern times ,sad in a way.

indeed it does, your average user (not including most people on here of course)just about know how to switch it on and navigate to facefail or porn xD

One of the main suppliers we use always offer a downgrade service, they will sell the PC as windows 8 downgraded to windows 7. Since they are offering that i assume they still have a high demand for 7.

But then again, these are mainly for businesses and windows 8 doesn't really fit the bill in that regard.

I bought a Windows 8 licence when it was cheap, preferred the old interface, went back to Windows 7.

If you have a W8 licence I wouldn't spend £60 though, I'd get something like Startisback, Start8, ClassicShell or the like and use that. I only use 7 because I have a licence for it, if I didn't I'd just use 8 as I described above.

I do quite like all the people that say Win8 is better than 7, you just have to disable this download this, this, this, this and this, turn this on and press this and it gets you back to pretty much what Win7 was!

EDIT: That said, the 2 main things stopping me from going to Win8 is the price (for the benefit I'll get) and the fact I've grown to detest re-installing everything on my PC!

Depends on the user you ask,I use Win8.1 as it is without any third party button mods, I don't need them, however I also use three different Linux distros so to me its all the same and nothing hard to adapt too regardless of the OS in question.

I do see your point about users making Win8 like Win7,what's the point you might as well stay on Win7.

This is solid advice. Save money and get the benefits of Windows 8 (Ie pretty much everything but the UI).

Please try a modern distro such as Ubuntu. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Some people just don't like change. If we didn't try anything new we'd still be living in caves.

Equally though, if we changed **** just for the sake of it cars wouldn't have round wheels. :p

Change is good if it's for the better which Windows 8's 2in1 GUI clearly isn't, except in the belief/opinion of an extremely vocal minority of Microsoft zealots.

It's all relative you could argue Win95 to Win7 UI is crap for touch users and behind the times with modern hardware,Win8 covers those changes,UI and OS had to change if its adapting new hardware like touch etc,end of the day you have to let go of the old ways sooner or later ,you can argue/justify all you want but we all know every OS has a limited time before something new comes along with new ideas etc and that includes Win7,8 etc...

Don't kid yourself it has not changed over the decades ,just look at DOS,Win3.11,Win95 and even some Linux distros.

You also can't blame Microsoft if they want to cover all the market and bring out a modern OS that covers it all, hate to say it the old desktop OS is no longer that important like the old days,it now has competition in modern times.

That's a pretty arrogant and uncalled for statement, personally I've seen things changing from pre DOS days to present so way before Win8 and probably before most of you guys were even born.

I'd say it's better to buy Windows 8 and do one of two things

Get used to the UI
or
Download http://www.startisback.com/

Start is back works amazingly well. Its the kind of start menu 8 should have included as an alterative to the modern UI. It's worth the £2.50 or so, but the trial is full version for 30 days.

It's about time someone came out and said that.

There antics of a small minority here need to be brought in check.
Moderation in this regard has been very weak.
