I currently have the following setup

Abit ip35 pro
Intel E6400 (o/c to 2.7gig
2GB Geil ram
PNY 9800GT graphics.
500GB F3 HDD
Creative S/C
Corsair VX450 PSU
Antec case

My question - is it worth upgrading my existing setup or would it be best to scrap the m/b cpu and ram and buy new.

I don't game but do use the PC for CAD.

If so what would be the recommends for replacement bits.

I am quite happy with the GPU,case, psu and HDD but I am prepared to consider peoples comments / suggestions.

Thanks

Try a cheap 40-80GB SSD install your OS + web browser and CAD programs on it.

I'm sure this will make you very happy.

Thanks for your comments....

Do SSD's really make that much difference?

It seems that you think it is worth sticking with the MB. Would it be worth getting something like a second hand E8400 or even a quad core and upping the ram to 4GB

an E8400 wouldn't be worth it tbh

a quad would be better, as u'll get double the cores

but if your struggling with some games, a new gpu could improve that, and if you upgrade the rest later, u will already have a decent gpu to use

Definately cheap core 2 quad, another 2 gig of ram and an SSD will certainly bring that back to life. You will be surprised what an SSD can bring to the table and the extra cores will help your CAD programs render quicker.

SSD for sure. Running a x25 80gb and its the best upgrade I've had. Running AutoCAD 2010 very well, loads and operates very fast, standard Q6600 and 2gb ram here :)

q9550 E0 - 130 tops or a q6600 for 75
Vertex 2e - 120ish optional? Maybe a cheap SATA Raid0 could tide you over
4 gigs of ddr2 - 50-60

the only question you have to ask is ' how good are my current sticks of RAM ? ' They could be holding you back on the overclock which would mean buying the quad is a pointless exercise.

I'm on a P35 like you and applied the above upgrades - It was like having a new machine - Being a developer - I can throw lots of VMs / IDEs / databases at it and it loves it. Traded my old RAM and went for 6gigs of Ballistix.

With the overclock it touches an i7 at stock so seriously I'm not in need of an upgrade until next gen :D
