Is it time for Quad Core?

Oh god so now enviromentalism has made it's way to OcUK god help us. We could all switch off our pc's tomorrow and make what 0.001% difference wow thats worth it . Climate change sad to say is already here and isn't going to be massively affected by no one having quads it's a problem that will have to be solved technologically not by lifestyle changes no matter how small all that does is make people feel better while achieving sod all. If people want to buy quads and clock them let them same if they want to buy duals but please don't try telling me "buying a dual saves the planet" as if your that bothered having no form of pc or laptop would mean you were doing more.

Defeatist attitude there RizlaKing, shame on you! :p

Amazing how riled people become when you point out a simple but yet constantly ignored fact . . .

A Quad Core uses a lot more power than a dual core yet does not offer a lot more benefits . . .

As long as a few peeps take that into consideration whereas maybe before they didn't then my efforts are worth it . .

I completely disagree with you there, it's very valid discussion for those not small minded enough to see boyond the fluff in their belly button!

Overclocking/tweaking are the highest forms of PC hardware mastery, some people cannot even get a computer they built to boot let alone run at year 2010 speeds. These same overclocking masters are also gurus to their own flocks and quite possibly an I.T professional who can influence the choice of which processor to use for their 300 machine roll out 2009.

50w, 100w, 200watts difference multiplied across hundreds maybe millions of machines is where my head is at, really huge difference, close down a nuclear power station or several kinda difference.

The people giving hardware advice have to take power costs into consideration, even the humble clocking teen living in his parents house cracking off the 3D-Marks, there's a lot of those I reckon, add them all together and the numbers soon rack up.

Think Big!
 Like I said, if you are truely concerned about the environment don't upgrade, you'll save the planet and not indulge in hypocritical sophistry to justify your next (unecessary) purchase. Which, by the way, will only add to the waste of resources your eco-friendly arguments here have produced.

There is a point of diminishing returns to any eco argument, this forum is well passed the peak of that curve. Presumably the only, real, reason to buy the vaunted e8xxx is to spend the money saved on yet more ultimately useless (gaming?) equipment? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that gaming is wrong, I love it.:)

The day i look up to an "IT professional" as the leader of my flock will be the day I re-evaluate the fluff in my navel :D:D;)

Ok well there ya go, not really any need for unpleasantries in a technical debate, catch you later in another thread maybe, when you need help! :)

it seems that software is going to be more about load management and process revision or at least until whilst developers learn how to handle this curveball that is the console.

Very nicely said but I'd like to add that ps3 and xbox processors and even graphics cards, are how old now? How much further has pc advanced came since then? If GTA4 was redesigned you could easily run it on a dual core.

You say defeatist i say realist doesn't really matter my point remains that dual or quad the enviromental damage is done by the time we buy them in the manfacturing process. Power usage is neither here nor there in pc terms and never has been so not really a consideration worth bothering with in the purchasing decision process.

Nuclear power is the only short term answer.

Err?

Nuclear fission is a short term thing ... maybe good enough for next 15-25+ years, nuclear fusion (how the sun works) however is the long term answer - and we are about 10-15 years away from that.

Hey man, they are both a piece of hardware with running costs! :)

Hi Big.Wayne, that is true. However, one is likely to have a significant effect on your financial side. The choice between choosing between two cars that have very similar specifications to each other, though one uses less fuel than the other, it would be a slightly easier decision to make since the cost of fuel is fairly high and running a car that uses a lot of fuel compared to a car that doesn't use quite as much would have an impact on your financial side of things.

Running a Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 on the other hand compared to an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale would have minimal effects, I would have thought, on your electricity bills.

Big.Wayne, I personally think you are taking this power consumption thing a little out of proportion and it isn't quite as bad as you are saying it is. :)

For most people in a year the difference in financial terms would be less then £40 so if you have the money to buy a quad your hardly going to notice another 40 tops on your leccy bill. I just hate the way enviromentalists ram lectures down peoples throats when the fact is lifestyle changes if made by everyone on the planet would have little effect hell even greenpeace have admitted it. There's enough misery in the world and guilt to be had let people buy whatever pc they want and get enjoyment from. If you want to talk about climate change and any of that stuff go to the greenpeace website and leave us out of it :).

Perhaps you should divert your attention to the people (with any chip) that leave their PC on 24/7, in most cases doing nothing, rather than doing the following:

0mgz Q6600 enjoy your lekky billz l0lz go buy duo man plz, save da penguins

I have an Intel Core i7 and purposely turn off Intel Speedstep so the CPU runs at max speed all the time, leave my computer on 24/7 and run orthos whenever the computer is idle.
Why? Because I can.

GTA IV does appear to run better on a quad
but to be honest is it worth upgrading your cpu, when you could get a xbox 360 and the game for around £115 ?
