Hi,

i have 5700X. its been a great CPU for work and play. however its been running for 2 years now and the idle temp is starting to creep up i have it on a arctic Freezer 3 240 AIO.

Would it be worth me re pasting the CPU? maybe using some Thermal grisly paste rather than MX6?

Any other thoughts or recommendation are most welcome :)

Thanks

P

I personally would recommend to do the thermal compound. When I did my pc gpu and cpu I went for PTM as it lasts longer and has similar peformace to liquid metal, and it is non conductive. I do clean my pc including the fans at least twice a year but then I do have dogs around. If the temps bother you then go for it, as lower ones longer lifespan and quieter system

I have an all in one cooler from 2016. for the 1st 5 years of life it was cooling a very hot intel i7 5820k. since then it has had a relatively easy life with my AMD 5800x however I have noticed the fans spin up more than they used too. I worry that the coolant is running low. is it possible to fill the coolant in aios?

If it was done properly in the first place you really shouldn't be having to redo MX6 or any decent paste after a couple of years - earlier version of some of the high performance Thermal Grizzly pastes tended to need redoing after a couple of years but not sure if that is still true today - and to a degree comes with the territory if using high performance pastes which might sacrifice some longevity for better cooling performance.

If idle temperatures are starting to creep up and the paste was applied properly in the first place then I'd suspect dust build up to be the cause or just the higher ambient temperatures with the weather at the moment. Even a fairly thin layer of dust, etc. on fan blades can reduce their effectiveness by a surprising amount.

MX6 definitely doesn't last as long as MX4. I've started repasting everything with MX4 again, and it's easier to spread anyway.

This.

Unless I'm changing my CPU due to an upgrade I don't think I've ever bothered to repaste it unless there was a notable heat issue that a good dust/clean didn't resolve.

That includes systems that ran for 5 + years without a problem, hell my current 5800X3D has been running happily on the same gunk for over 3 years without issue.

Also worth noting that the current heatwave doesn't exactly help with things either if you're not in an air conditioned room.

You can check for low coolant by weighing the thing. In another thread someone found that they had lost 0.5 kg of fluid!
There's no way. Closed-loop coolers don't even have that much coolant capacity; it's a few hundred mL at most.

This is why big fat air coolers rule.

No Pumps and all that crap. it's just extra complication.
and extra weight and tend to be pretty loud. I can't knock my AIO. it's done an incredible job for over a decade including 2 years running 24/7 mining and 5 years on a heavily over locked very hot running i7 5820k.

I just like to maximise the use of of my stuff .

I don't find noise an issue.. You still have fans on a radiator. Fans are fans. Some are louder than others at speed 'x' verses speed 'Y'.

Well why not if the idle temps are creeping up, it may be that the fittings and screws have loosened a tiny bit or whatever so its worth doing considering its a easy job unless its fused on there are refuses to separate easily
